Shooting 60 fps for Web Distribution

PostSat Mar 25, 2017 4:03 pm

Last week I shot raw 4:1 30 fps project frame rate and 60 fps (216 degree shutter angle) for my sensor frame rate. That worked out well for the client, including the audio recorded at 30 fps. I concerns doing that, but for this morning's shoot I plan to have a project frame rate of 60 fps and distribute on YouTube.

Can anyone confirm that the YouTube will support 60 fps HD video playback? Sorry for the rush but I need an answer within an hour or so. If no one is confident this will be fine, I can stay with project frame rate 30 fps.

I've played up to 4K at 60fps smoothly from YouTube.

Okay, I checked Google's YouTube upload guidelines and they do support H.264 up to 60 fps.

This week i uploaded in ProRes 422 HQ (67 GB) and they accepted it! But I'll continue with the recommended H.264 for now.

Rick, any special reason why you shoot at a 216 deg shutter angle? Creative choice?

Shooting 60 fps for Web Distribution

PostSun Mar 26, 2017 5:50 am

Timothy, just experimenting on the motion that is associated with various frame rates and shutter angles when the subjects are moving quickly. I saw some motion that didn't appeal to me in last week's footage, so today I shot all 60 fps with 150 degree shutter angle. From tests I performed last year, I know that's likely as fast an angle as I'll use. Looking forward to editing this tomorrow. And I'll see if the shorter angle suited the subject. With controlled narrative and HFR, 216 degrees may be fine, but for fast movement in the frame, I'm looking to nail down how I'll approach it regularly. I enjoy the learning process.

Edit:
I liked the results using a 150 degree shutter angle yesterday. I think I'll stick with that when I need to manage fast motion in a fairly natural way.

Yep, 150-180 degree at 60fps is the normal 2X fps shutter speed (1/100-1/120h Sec), for best looking motion in moving subjects, especially at 60pfs, has been my experience also.

Hey, I think Mr. Hurlbut is rubbing off on me. I'm coming to the same conclusion by testing that everyone else knows to be true. First step on my way to an ASC I guess!

Testing does not hurt, done my fair share of it also. As for a ASC, Good, go for it Rick!
