The widest lens for Ursa mini 4.6k

PostFri Apr 21, 2017 8:54 pm

Hey guys, I have a client who wants regular real estate videos shooting and the widest i currently own is a Sigma 17-50mm which isnt quite wide enough.

This is going to turn into pretty regular business so im considering picking up a GH5 and a 7-14mm combo but before i invest that into the business i was wondering if there is a lens that will go on the Ursa and come anywhere near the 7mm that id like?

My Tokina 11-16mm works great on the URSA Mini 4.6K as a wide lens. I'd suggest looking into that as an option. There is the photo version and cine version of the lens. The photo version is F2.8, while the cine is T3.0 if I remember correctly.

Additional note: I checked PCAM on my phone. The GH4 would need a 7.5mm lens to match the URSA Mini 4.6K with a 11mm lens. So if the GH5 has the same sensor size as the GH4 then you should be in the ballpark with the 11-16 Tokina for what you're looking for.

Ditto on the Tokina 11-16mm. I have both the Tokina Cine EF version, and a rehoused GL Optics version with PL mount. Really good optics, especially for the price.

My first post here! Just thought I'd get involved and mention another alternative: the Canon 11-24mm is an amazing rectilinear wide-angle lens that I've used a lot for real estate filming/photography. It covers a full frame sensor so is also great for use on the 4.6k sensor. It's an expensive lens, but delivers amazing results! It's really perfect for real estate/architecture as it's rectilinear design means that it doesn't distort straight lines like walls, doorways etc, which tends to look a LOT better when shooting indoors. There is also a newish lens from Sigma (12-24mm ART series) which looks like a cheaper alternative to the canon, but if the rest of the ART range is anything to go by I'm sure it'd be a quality piece of glass!

I used the Tokina 11-16 and 11-20 for real estate for years now, thinking it was the only real option...until the Laowa 12mm f2.8. Check it out, way, way better image quality, especially for architecture and real estate. And it covers full frame as a bonus.

I have the Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8. It's better than the older 11-16mm version. The crop of a GH5 is 2x so your 7mm will be a 14mm. The URSA Mini 4.6K has a crop of 1.42x so 11mm would be 15.62mm. That's very close so why buy another camera and a lens when you can buy the Tokina 11-20mm to use with the URSA Mini 4.6K?

You do not need to keep referencing a Cinema camera to a still 135mm frame. S35 is the currect Cine reference format, Std, Academy 35 was the previous standard. The crop difference from MFT to S35 is 1.50, since the 4.6 full gate sensor is larger, X1.42 factor will allow a lens focal'elngth AOV coverage between MFT and the 4.6 sensor directly. To get the same coverage a 7mm would have in MFT, you would need around a 10mm lens on the UM 4.6. The Tokina 11-20, as Keith recommended would be close to the same covera on the UM 4.6 as a 7-14 on a MFT camera. So I agree, why buy another camera, unless you want a smaller rig than the UM.

The widest lens for Ursa mini 4.6k

If this is going to be a lucrative repeating assignment, I'd strongly recommend a tilt-shift lens to elevate the quality of work in terms of minimizing perspective distortion that can be distracting on these ultra-wide lenses.

I suspect your client may end up covering the increased cost in the first year of your assignments and appreciate the images more.

I don't know if this helps, but here's a review related to Canon's 17mm tilt-shift lens:

If you want something less expensive, here's a very detailed review of the Samyang/Rokinon 24mm tilt-shift lens:

The 17mm tilt/shift Canon lens would certainly do,the job Rick! Nice find, but Christian was commenting his existing 17mm zoom was not wide enough.

I was just trying to subliminally suggest that when one is doing rectilinear architecture with distortion and focal plane correction, 17mm could be wide enough. At least when considering a tilt-shift lens that can cover 135 film for stills as well.

Just my opinion here and I certainly defer to the OP's needs in the end, but, I've seen a lot of architectural shots that are wider and it can be interesting visual art, but if the client is a realtor and the ultimate customer is looking for a more factual presentation of video information, a 17mm tilt-shift might work. For particular shots that are in very tight quarters, shooting stills could also possibly suffice. Really wide angles if the camera is in motion can easily produce unsettling video.

Rick, you are spot in as usual. I agree, 17mm with a tilt-shift lens should be wide enough, any wider and distortion will be evident. Personally, I was not impressed with the Tokina 11-16mm lens either. The Tokina 17mm is a much better wide angle lens, less distortion and has a nice IQ.

I have the Sigma 10-20mm/f3,5, EF version. It works on the UM46K, no problem.
