Vertical Slider Setup?

PostSat Apr 22, 2017 12:42 pm

Hello again everyone!

Perhaps some might remember me from a few days back asking about crop factor adjustments and compatible lenses for the URSA Mini Pro 4.6k. Well I'm back again with a rather simple, but frustrating question about another piece of gear—a vertical slider. In my short film, there are a few instances where I need the camera to crane vertically down beneath a table and then crane vertically back up above the table. However I know that I specifically need a slider rather than a jib for this shot as a jib doesn't produce the same intended effect as a slider positioned vertically.

I know that you can simply attach most any sliders onto a tripod and then tilt the tripod head 90 degrees to achieve a vertical angle, however I feel it isn't this simple if I am going to be using the URSA Mini Pro. The weight of the camera as well as having to tilt the tripod head it will be attached to both don't seem very accommodating for the scenario I just mentioned. In my mind I need a slider that is both designed for being used vertically as well as designed to support a 50+ pound camera—a counterweight system would be ideal as well. However oddly enough the only sliders I have found that meet these requirements are no longer available for purchase, and I cannot for the life of me find any suitable slider or slider rig/configuration that will get the job done.

Would anyone happen to know of such a slider and the necessary configuration for this rig? Worst case scenario is I design and build my own DIY slider that will fit the bill as I need it, but I prefer to stray away from going that route as much as I can. Thanks!

There's this, but it's pretty pricey...

Vertical Slider Setup?

Very nice find, Chris. From 0-60 degrees plus 90 degrees up to 70 lbs payload. Just find someone that can rent it out and problem solved.

Robert, the Cinevate site is very good at going into the details using several videos to explain the products. Still about $2,000 when you add the flywheel and counterweight system. Add $1,200 for motor control if one needs that precise motion for each take.

If this is a one-time shot, why not bite the bullet and rent an Elemac or Fisher dolly and use an L plate to get lower? Then you can get a solid, smooth vertical motion without the lateral motion of a crane.

Once again, thank you everyone for your input! And Paul, I may look into that but the size/available space for the set would be the only concern for going that route.
