Halo Proof of Concept Trailer Screenshots

PostMon May 01, 2017 10:08 pm

5-16: Added video
Added Proof of Concept:

Some screenshots from a zero budget, proof of concept video I'm almost done with.
The majority was shot on the Ursa Mini 4.6K with a few things on Sony a7sII + Ursa Mini 4K.

Took a while since this was a "weekend" project. The thing that sticks out like a sore thumb is that I learned a lot shooting this and so a lot of it seems like it was shot by different people. Also, it was a learning curve shooting the Master Chief given he's 7' 2". A lot left to learn!

Jason, MSFT has a usage rule for non-profit fan films. The concept video itself is fine.

It's way shorter than short :p
The suit is not mobile (can't run/jump/sit/kneel/move elbows and etc) and officially retired until... :P

pretty cool - nice job on MC's Mjolnir armor :)

know what you mean on the height thing - I was director on the halo 5 cinematics here at Axis (and Spartan Ops for halo 4 before that - all CG though - we're one of a few studios who specialize in that kind of work )

Oh wow, that's awesome!
I remember watching them—extremely impressive!

How did you guys decide to do it?

Physically he's also over 1.5 feet taller than I am :p

Little fun stuff:
My friend Phil is the creator of the armor and is worn by my other friend, John.
The suit was retired a few days ago.

That'd be the one thing, wouldn't it. Not sure about the legality of a Kickstarter campaign. I'm sure it's fine since it's for paying for the production of a non-profit fan film, and not paying for the rights to the film, for example. But, yeah...be careful, man. I'd hate to see all this beautiful work get anyone in trouble.

And the work IS beautiful. Can't wait to see it.

Also, very generous of you sharing your BTS.

That suit looks amazing. I remember seeing you first halo fan film clip on vimeo when the 4.6K came out. Looked really good!

thank you for taking the time to check it out! I only think one scene from that is kept in the final version.

I appreciate that! :D And yes that part is the grey area—there has been crowdfunding the past but not quite like what we're doing. But yes, not sure about that part :/ The Proof of Concept will be separated from the Kickstarter, and even if we can only release that video, it was an amazing team building experience.
Interesting enough, I've had conversations with 343i but not MSFT.

we tried to use the height thing to emphasize the difference between the Spartans and normal humans
essentially you end up shooting up at them a lot :)

more on Spartan Ops since there were more non-spartan humans in that series than the 7 or so scenes we did for Halo 5 (there were a lot of additional in-engine cutscenes that Brien Goodrich and the team at 343 did for that as well - and we jointly collaborated on the big opening downhill bit that opened the game, with them doing the animation and us doing all the lighting and VFX)

Bruce Thomas who is the mocap actor for MC is awesome - I remember walking onto the mocap stage for the first time and within about a second I knew who he was playing (the mocap actors are basically all just wearing lycra suits with dots all over them) - he just has this amazing stillness and economy of motion that really really works for that character

Thanks Robert!

Re-grading a large majority now that the edit is locked.

I regret not getting the wireless follow focus earlier. I got one a few months after hence this shot IS out of focus.
Did not intend to use it but I might since it goes by quickly.

Which follow focus did you go with? I have an old school mechanical one, and we are at the limits of what we can do with it, so I'm looking for an affordable but reliable FIZ.

DJI Focus.

Only used it 2x before motor wouldn't work. Sent it in and waiting for it to come back.
Will probably get the Tilta Nucleus over at RU. Check it out if you haven't.

Having a gimbal + WFF is a must. Really ups the shots you can do rather than x/y shots + you can have DOF :p

Added the Proof of Concept.

Youtube

Not sure why Vimeo/Youtube tints the color versus the one I'm viewing on desktop.
Really proud of how the group came together—learned a lot from it.

Not perfect—definitely a lot of areas to improve upon—but truly a stellar group of people!
Shot on 4.6K + 4K + a7sII.
