No signal on front SDI on new Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k

PostTue May 23, 2017 1:45 pm

Deal all,
I'm looking on the manual but I cannot find how to enable the front SDI.

On my new (1 week) Ursa Mini Pro 4.6 I do not have (yet) any viewfinder. For testing I plug an SDI HD monitor on the rear SDI plug without problem. I want to have a "selfie" display too so I want to use in the same time the front SDI in place of the viewfinder.

But when I plug a 1080p monitor on the front SDI I do not have any signal.
On the camera menu I went to monitor and chose 1080p (1080i is not selectable) the main FPS is 25.
I also selected "Cinematographer"

Is the front SDI only compatible with the BMD viewfinder or is there anything to select for enabling it?

My camera FW is 4.3.3

The Front SDI is active at all times. It may default to 1080p and your monitor is 1080i or vice versa. That's the only control available to change the protocol used. Same place you selected Cinematographer view on the Front SDI display.

Make sure Front SDI is Enabled in the Monitor menu. You may have it off. Highlight it, or just set all three ON.
It does send a signal to via 3G SDI cable to any device, not just to the BMD VF.

Thank you for your help Rick, 1080i is greyed, and my monitor (Atomos Shogun) is working perfectly on the rear SDI in 1080p25.
It seems that my front SDI is not working at all.

Ronan, my 1080i is greyed until I select it and then it looks normal brightness. But if that doesn't happen for you, then I agree, a call to BMD Support for an RMA or return the faulty camera to the authorized reseller for an exchange with a NEW camera.

Strange because on mine, 1080i cannot be selected nor in front sdi nor in main sdi. On main sdi I can 2160p or 1080p but never 1080i. I reset the camera settings and it does not help.
I'll call BMD asap.
It is very annoying on a new camera.

You can only select 1080i when you shoot in 50p or 60p because that's the only way the camera can create interlaced fields.

Thank you Robert for your help.
So now I can say my front sdi is broken in 1080p and 1080i.
This is what I qualify as ´annoying' :(
Does someone knows How long takes a RMA in France?

Strange thing:
Because of your problem I did some tests with my UM46k, my Shogun Inferno and Canon XF305.
The UM46k has SDI IN below the main SDI OUT. If the camera receives a signal on the SDI IN you can press the PGM button to show the input signal. So I thought, why not connect the front SDI OUT to back SDI IN for testing the front SDI port. Well, I haven't been able to get a signal from my SDI IN, neither by feeding it from the front SDI nor by feeding it from the Canon XF305.

So it might be that my SDI IN is broken. Has anybody had success feeding the SDI IN directly from another camera or does this only work with an ATEM switcher sending the signal?

Hi Robert I've just tested to feed sdi in from my bmpc 4k nothing... and obviously from front sdi to sdi nothing.

I've experienced this.

I was running out SDI front and back. All of the sudden the front cut off its signal to the monitor (video assist) but kept a feed from the back into my wireless transmitter. Hmm I thought it was the monitor dying, not so. I then plugged in the rear SDI trans cable into the front and that worked. Made zero sense at all. Almost forgot this happened till this thread.

Since I'm back. I've just called today BM Support center in UK. I spoke with a very comprehensive guy.
After a few tests it appears that it is a hardware failure.
My camera and my viewfinder are going in RMA tomorrow via Fedex.

I have talked to my vendor about my SDI-IN and why I can't get a signal. After that I did some further testing and here are the results:

1. My SDI-IN is working :) To get a signal you have to feed the same frame rate as the camera is set to.
2. When I fed the SDI-IN from my Canon XF305 I was not able to get a signal because the SDI-OUT of the XF sends 1080i50 anyway (camera was set to 1080p25). After setting my UM46k to 50p I got the signal. So double check what signal you are really sending to your SDI-IN. :-)

Yes, the SDI in is for a video switcher program/monitor out feed, which would be the same frame rate and resolution as the camera is set for. Just like all the other BM gear, the signal must match!
