Leaving Lens on Ursa Mini 4.6k

PostMon Jun 19, 2017 11:45 pm

Hi everyone,

I am glad to finally join the Blackmagic community as I have just received my Ursa Mini 4.6k!

I plan on storing my camera at home in a dry box to protect it from dust and humidity. Should I leave my Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 lens on the Ursa Mini 4.6k (to avoid removing the lens and thus inserting dust) or is it safer to remove it (because of the weight of the lens)?

If any experienced Ursa Mini 4.6k users could share their advice, it would be incredibly helpful.

Hoping this is thread-worthy, if not please PM me.

Thanks in advance, cheers!

Leaving Lens on Ursa Mini 4.6k

All my lenses are supported and I tend to leave the last lens I use on the camera if I know I'll be using it on the next shoot. Maybe it would be best to store the lenses with some silica gel. Or keep that in the box you're proposing to use.

If its static, being stored, leaving the lens on will do no harm. If it's traveling, even in a case in your car, you should remove the lens. Any lens that you can't hold by the mount between thumb and index finger, needs supporting.

Thanks very much Rick and Patrick, your replies help a lot.

I will purchase a lens support for my Sigma now and leave the supported lens on the camera (when stored) with a couple of silica gel packs in the dry box.

Cheers

It's MORE important to store your lens in a dry box than to do it with your camera, so store the camera together with the lens unless it's too heavy.

If your camera ever needs cleaning then you clean the protection/filter glass and sensor only which is relatively easy (I said - relatively).

If your lens needs cleaning then you should disassemble it all. It's a lot of work, especially when it's a modern electronically controlled zoom. And I am not sure that it could be done at all. You know, the fungus etches the glass...

I have a few different supports, but I've been using this one with my 4.6/sigma18-35 combo for a while now...

Thanks for the link Chris, good to know this is a real option for supporting my primary lens. Do you personally leave the lens on your 4.6K or do you remove it when storing the camera?

Thanks again Rick, I will probably choose between the ikan LS-T03 and the Lanparte in the upcoming days. Great to hear the ikan works for you before purchasing, especially at that price. Cheers.

I typically leave it on with the support and haven't had any issues.

Yes, I also leave it on when using my APO primes and off when using the Fujinon Zoom since I use my matte box to support the long lens.
