Ho hope like many other to have more codec as possible, not only for me, but also for delivery footage to other.
Dnxhr is not avaible, May be a limit of 4.6k size? May be dnx work only with some size and proportion?
I know prores, cineform work with and size and shape, the only rule is that size must be 8 multiplex (May be for a compressione matrix), but today i could think.that dnx is in the some way limited to X standard size?
If it is like i thought, better to have in fine size like hd, fhd, uhd instead of Nothing like now. Broadcast use different sensor but output Broadcast size, and it have dnx

There is no mod 8 rule for ProRes nor Cineform nor DNxHR. You can export any "fancy" frame size.
We should focus on DNxHR, not DNxHD which is by design(/licensing?) limited to HD and strict broadcast frame sizes.

Bumping this request back up. Was hoping that firmware 5.x for the Ursa Mini Pro would feature DNxHR and Gen 4 color science like whats been available for firmware 5.x on the Ursa Broadcast.

Thought they might have been waiting for CineGear to update the UMP but with the latest firmware release not including either feature I'm starting to worry they may never arrive. Hoping that if we make enough noise for demand that it won't fall by the wayside for development on other cameras.

Serious question: your pc can read Prores and export footage into DNxHD without any visual loss, right? Assuming any footage you have will need to be graded/edit anyway (and therefore need to be re-rendered), what is the problem? I honestly might be missing something here.

Here's a post facility explaining why they have switched to DNxHR:

Yes, even if I don't need it.

It's always been greyed out in the menu since the beginning, and zero updates since launch.

Pat, thanks for that link. I always optimize my raw to ProRes HQ for editing/grading in Resolve on my iMac. Wondering if anyone here would recommend DNxHR as a better intermediate codec for my use case?

IMHO, it depends on your environment. If you have clients with specific needs, you have to serve them.
As long as it's personal use, there's not much of a difference, at least not quality wise.

I have had a number of issues in the PC world with strange gamma shifts when using Prores, DNx encodings fixed all these, both PC and Mac clients once persuaded have had no issues. Prores is fine for an all Mac workflow but introduce a PC and it becomes a lottery.

Here's my annual reply, reiterating strong need for DNxHD/R please. Blackmagic needs to be thinking about optimized playback and rendering on PCs in 2018. I'm a life long Mac person, but I find PCs are so much more powerful for 4K workflows with Resolve and Adobe Premiere.

I agree that this is a very important feature that is not only needed but is also becoming required in today's professional post world.

Since you're on a mac, you probably wouldn't gain much, though QuickTime is notorious for inconsistent color on other platforms.

It is definitely becoming a necessity for more and more though, because quicktime in windows is bad, and macs are falling ever farther behind (due, I suspect, to a lack of interest in Apple's part).

Yes, no problem opening ProRes on a PC. H.264 had more problems now after the last Windows update ;-)

Has this ever been acknowledged by Blackmagic staff? Is DNxHD/DNxHR going to be supported by the older Blackmagic Design URSA cameras?

About to purchase a Mini 4K EF.

While, their may not be any updates to DNxHD, you can still use this codec on the older Cameras that supports it. Unlikely it will get added to any other cameras.

Aren’t these available on the old video assist 4K. I’m pretty sure mine has the DNX stuff. Seems like the Ursa broadcast would be more likely to carry these.

Okay... but BRAW has not been announced/promised for the URSA Mini 4K. So now thinking of NOT getting it.

How about a filesize/quality comparison between the DNx flavors and BRAW compressions? Anyone ever seen one of those?

A Bit ******* that the 4.6 was gimped out of Dnx and B-Raw.

I’m also more curious about DNxHR now. When the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G 7” arrives, I’ll be sure and run some comparisons between HQX and ProRes HQ. And BRAW on the BMPCC4K.

They are about the same with ProRes been marginally (to the point where it doesn't really matter) better.
DNxHR can be real RGB based though, which can be useful.

Thanks, Andrew. Will be an interesting comparison to do. Maybe it will be like my old ProRes comparison when I ran through all flavours: in a blind test very difficult to see the difference with one level and the next level of compression, but it is there.

For those codecs you rater want to run PSNR comparison. Visually at 1:1 size it's going to be crazy difficult to tell difference.

Considering we’re approaching 4-years since DNx was said to come, and it hasn’t happened, then it feels safe to say it’s not coming. Especially when BRAW replaced the Greyed Out Button on the UMP.

If you're not using Avid, or better yet Avid News or those products it won't really matter, I think the discussion is a workflow or/and delivery option - where either the ENG/DOC must be in as fast as possible in AVID consumable or quickly send out to post to it without AMA plugins or transcode - So if lack of DNxHD never impacted your workflow - or you don't cut or deliver raw in AVID formats then it won't impact you much, esp. if you have a GPU where you can re-dump the stuff. I did have jobs where the memory cards were from the studio, so there yeah, they will create hell if even 30 seconds of delay to prime exist. - Unless all the +1's just really like AVID. Some folks like to get things out the door quick, and DNxHD and MXF container support would help them or their post people. Post tools that handle ProRes well may not be best for DF broadcast and tight deadlines. This is why everyone is asking about it - that is my assumption.

Like I literally spent a ton of time with a team from Phillips figuring out what the generational loss was on ProRes422 interlaced for ATSC 1080 broadcast, while someone else asked from business - but what do we do for Avid News? - So options are good, but that does not mean that ProRes or DNxHD are some how not neck and neck. I think it's more a workflow issue, tooling issue more than colorspace or codec per se of codec issue. Because if you have a long post cycle, ProRes is very very good, but if you need something right away in Media Composer DNx... is much much better.

Basically if you were never in a situation where you dump your SSD media on a NetBook in a Starbucks on their WIFI so you can go to air or social media first, then this won't impact you at all. - Sort of like the photo crowd that shoots on MicroSSD cards so they can plug it into the android phones and send it up.

But just to be clear. I support all options given the duality of our business all the way from scripted and lit all the way to ENG in the trenches - and I also support each persons workflow preferences be it PC or MAC, be it AVID, FCP, Resolve or Premiere.

I’m not in broadcast or Avid and MXF, but just curious to see how the codec performs when I can compare apples-to-apples on the BMVA12G7.

You can already check it with any tool which has properly implemented both codecs, eg. Resolve one Mac. It won't be really any different only because it's "in camera".
