CARL ZEISS VARIO-SONNAR 10-100MM 1:2.8 for BMPCC

PostThu Jun 29, 2017 1:34 pm

Hi,

can someone tell something about the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 10-100 2.8 and 1.8?
Does ist cover the BMPCC sensor? Completely (16:9)? Or slight vignetting in corner, but still ok for 2.35:1?
Is it parfocal?
Is it ok? Or is it crap?
Its available for about 600 dollars.

It is a nice lens, but the 10-100 version is standard 16mm gate coverage, so it will vignette on the S16 sensor ofmrhe Pocket/Micro camera at its wider angle settings, somewhere around mid zoom (25-35mm) it will cover the entire Pocket/Micro sensor. The S16mm version of this lens is the 11-110mm zoom. I would recommend looking for a 10-100 that has been upgraded to a S1611-110mm, or get the newer Zeiss 11-110mm lens.

If you do not need this lingmof a zoom range, there are some new shorter zoom range lens out that will civermS16, Angenieux Optimo S16 zooms are nice also.

It has massive distortion in both versions (like most zooms of the time) and is huge.
Have a look at the smaller zooms by Angenieux, there's a 20 to 80mm Super-16 which fits the Pocket nicely.

Vintagelensesforvideo has some footage of this or the 17.5 version.

I did quite a bit of research into this same dilemma myself.

I ended up going with the Canon 8-64mm T2.4 for several reasons:

1. covers S16 (perfect for BMPCC) in fact nearly covers the BMCC (from 11-64 I believe, but yet to test this)
2. Great range (wider than Zeiss 11-110)
3. Has very well controlled CA (better than Zeiss 11-110)
4. Well balanced - some of the wide S16 zooms are very front heavy
5. Compact for the range
6. Beautiful image rendition
7. Genuinely fast at T2.4

I'm certainly not disappointed with the investment. I use it on my BMPCC and UM4.6k in 2K window mode.

Yes, that's a better choice. But quite sought after – may I ask how much you paid?

Hey Uli, I bought mine for AU$3900 (or approx US$3000). It's in great condition both mechanically and optically.

A set of good lenses can cost more than your camera, that's normal. They also last longer (if they are manual).

Good glass is an investment. Cameras are disposable. If you have patience you can find some pretty good deals. Gecko Cam just dumped a couple Canon 7-63s and 11-165s for about $1000 US each. You have to be careful though zoom servicing starts at about $500 bucks and goes up quickly from there.

Yes. For "full" frame and for 35mm. And maybe also for MFT.
But also for super16?

I think super16 will die (with the pocket).

I use my Super16 lens on my URSA Mini more than my pocket.

CARL ZEISS VARIO-SONNAR 10-100MM 1:2.8 for BMPCC

PostSat Jul 29, 2017 3:38 am

After 15 months using the URSA Mini 4.6K PL, my Fujinon HD zoom gets more use shooting 2K for my clients than my SLR Magic APO primes that cover 135 and probably Vistavision.

Part of the reason is the ease if use of a 20x Zoom when following action (usually I use it like a 10-120mm Zoom). Sure I always use the APO for personal work, and I've used the APO for client work but with only 25mm, 50mm, and 85mm in the set, coverage can be an issue. Having the 18mm and 135mm will help but that may be a year away.

I have invested in S16 Primes years ago, still using them. Will they work with all cameras? No, but you can choose cameras that they will work with, like the Ursa Mini (PL) or Pro. . Like Rick, shooting larger formats like S35mis mostly personal projects, and then I use my Zeiss ZF lenses, especially the 28mm f/2.0!

A cheap and pretty good alternative is Angenieux 15-150mm T3.3

Some come in PL, some in C-mount, so an adapter is needed.

Cost is around 500-1500€/$ depending on the condition and configuration.
