The BMCC still rocks it for us! What we've been working on

PostTue Mar 19, 2013 12:52 am

Sorry for me being a little absent from the forum, but we've been incredibly busy here, a lot of it due to the Cinema Camera! I figured I'd share some info and get people up to speed on what we've been up to with the camera.

First, I have to say that by all accounts, the Cinema Camera has been treating us extremely well here at OneRiver Media. In a way, it’s kind of sad that our other cameras have been collecting dust on the shelves. But this camera is THAT GOOD. Even at 10-bit ProRes HQ the images we get out of the BMCC are amazing.

I’ve had the camera for quite some time now; since mid-2012. We’ve used it on short film production, commercial production, PSA production, corporate production, visual effects plate production, chromakey production, live event production (first ever 100-meter fiber thunderbolt transmission in the world), documentary production, stock footage production, and last but not least, personal enjoyment production! I still get a good chuckle when I see people say this camera can’t be used for this or that. Yes, it definitely has some quarks that’ll hopefully be hammered out in firmware updates, but even despite that, I’ve made the camera work, successfully I might add, for me. Like any other camera, it’s simply a tool, and you learn how to use the tool and take advantage of its strengths and work around its weaknesses. But for me, its strengths (the biggest being its image capture quality) far outweigh any hurdles.

So what have we done? Here are some updates…

NEXUS, The Critical Phase
As some of you know, we're in early production for our short film, "NEXUS, The Critical Phase". It's been going very well and we have more production planned in the next weeks to come. The entire film will be shot only with the Cinema Camera and only in 2.5K RAW. We have a website on the details here including BTS: http://www.nexus-film.com. Below are some pre-grades of some of the shots.

BMW Documentary
I can't go into too many details just yet, but we started production on this back in December and have had various production days since. The vast majority of footage will be acquired using the Cinema Camera as well (probably a good 90% of it). The majority of this will actually be shot in ProRes HQ, with some beauty footage shot in RAW. Below are some pre-grades of some sample shots.

Workshops
I've also been busy touring around speaking at different venues relating to the Cinema Camera, including Hollywood Post Alliance, Digital Cinema Society, Boston Creative Pro User Group, Los Angeles Creative Pro User Group, San Francisco CPUG Supermeet, and more. I have a schedule of events lined up if anyone is interested in attending.

Atlanta Cutters Presentation
March 27, 2013 I'm giving a 90-minute presentation on the Cinema Camera at the Atlanta Cutters group at Turner Studios. Rob Ashe, editor on the Conan O'Brien Show will also be presenting. Full details here.

Atlanta 2-day Workshop
March 29-30, 2013 I'm partnering with Biscardi Media (outside of Atlanta) where I'm presenting a 2-day workshop on the Cinema Camera. Day 1 is geared for shooters, and day 2 is geared for those in post. I'll be covering a lot of ground at this one, and I'll be showing sample footage from NEXUS, the BMW documentary, and other various productions and such. One person is flying all the way from DUBAI for this event! This is going to be an info-packed event. Plus some incredible give-aways as well, including DaVinci Resolve, a Flanders Scientific LM-2140W monitor, a $200 FSI gift certificate for all attendees and more! Full details here.

NAB Presentation
April 6, 2013 I'm giving a 90-minute presentation on the Cinema Camera at NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) during their Post/Production World event for the DP slot. Full details here.

We're also planning another round of workshops in Boston, L.A., San Francisco, possibly New York, and looking into Europe as well. If you want the latest details as these events unfold, you can subscribe to my Cinema Camera newsletter at onerivermedia.com/bmcc, as well as on Facebook, and Twitter.

Okay, hopefully that brings everyone up to speed. I hope to see you at some of these events with a sneak peek into what we’ve been doing with the camera. Cheers!

Thanks so much, Darryl! Very kind of you! Our latest crusade is terminating some YouTube videos that are in complete copyright infringement violation of our works. It really makes my stomach turn. Thanks again for your support!

Looks great, Marco. Which lenses were used for those two shots for Nexus? I'm looking into some Rokinon and planning to start with the Rokinon 35mm and just back up for shots like the ones you posted. Looks great, though! Thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work!

Camera reviews mixed with workshop sales 8-)

Hard not to see a bias here (regardless of the camreas fantastic abilities)

It is inevitable though. I suppose.

Paul: Thanks for the kind remarks. All my Nexus shots are slated with the lens and aperture so you're in luck! Both of those Nexus shots were done with the Canon 24mm f/1.4L. Even the Rokinon 35mm is a bit long on the BMCC, so you might want to consider the Rokinon 24mm, but again, I haven't had a chance to play with that lens in the bunch yet, so I can't give an experienced opinion unfortunately. But if it's anywhere the quality of the 35mm and especially the 14mm, then I'd go for it.

Theodore: These latest workshops are bi-products of my long experience with having owned the camera since before its public release. I'm packing all of that experience into these two days, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I'm giving the dirt that people want to know, and that they cannot find anywhere else, including the internet. I have not, nor plan on being a "professional presenter" as my greatest enjoyment is twisting lenses, pushing pixels, and creating media. If you want to join in on the fun, maybe win a license of Resolve or a Flanders Scientific LM-2140W monitor, then come on down! If not, then that's fine too. But please, don't undermine the value of what I'll be presenting to those that will gain a huge jump-start in using their camera in real-world production and post-production workflows. Thank you.

Darryl: Wow, I didn't know I was such an influence on you getting a BMCC! You're very kind, sir!

TZuck: LOL, too funny! And thanks! Trust me, you'll get plenty of info on the BMW documentary as it develops. Since it's a documentary, this will not be a short project. We have a TON of production dates scheduled for it this year. So far, everything has been falling into place wonderfully. The wait will be worth it! We'll have a dedicated website for it in short time, so you can follow all the info there as well. Stay tuned, and thanks again! :D

Theres a right way, and wrong way to show dissent. Looks your blatant lack of medication today kicked in and you disrepect the entire forum with profanity and zero decorum.

Ask yourself how you feel so strongly about what I wrote that would make you repond with the typical radical fanboyism...

Hey Marco, i never questioned your grit and zeal for the bmcc (and ive got a copy of Resolve, it came with my camera too ...) sorry this punk had to turn your thread into a maniacal rant sesion, but hey..it is the internet.

Not sure why that would be a shock Marco, You have showed some very nice examples of what this camera can do, And showed use a nice comparison video to boot, I'm very thankful for your efforts
experience and time to all of this so we have a better understanding of our purchasing options,
This is not a cheap camera for many, and having you and others showing us what can be done with the BMCC is what swayed many of us to consider this camera, and I thank you all for that.

I'm not going to quote what you just posted, Darryl, it's astounding that you're still allowed to participate here. Your posts are generally useless, if not downright horrific.

The sadder truth's that even if you were politely escorted to the e-door, you would likely come back in another form.

That's nice Kholi thanks for the support, and you have nothing to contribute here, your input is null and void, as you must be friends with "Dear Theodore" who obviously has a problem with being told when to shut his PIE hole, And yes I know you from my past, yet you come trolling on this topic as if you have been here contributing your input for years, Give me a break this is an obviously and hard up attempt by you to try and put me down, are a trolling tonight?, Give your ego a rest Kholi, I have nothing against you yet.

In my defense, I will say this... any form of disrespect I have shown to any member here I apologize here and now, and for any member here who barks or tries to bite and has no teeth???, I'll be here to hand you a chew toy!

While everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion Theodore, the whole point of these forum is the exchange of information and sharing of experience. I haven't found you to provide either in any of your posts. Nor have I see any samples of your work by which to weight the validity of your comments by.

You're trolling...and no one appreciates having their time wasted by trolls.

Thanks again Marco for posting. Curious, would you prefer the 4/3 mount over the EF?

Hi Sean. Yeah, that's the million-dollar question. The answer will be different for everyone. I have Canon EF glass that spans back to 35mm film days, so I've always had a collection of Canon lenses, and grew even more when DSLR technology came into play with the 10D and 20D. And then when the 5D came along, almost all my Canon glass went L. Because of that history, having an EF mount BMCC was important to me. Plus the advantage of IS support on the EF model is a big bonus to me... I use that feature frequently. I've even used IS intentionally while on sticks, even though you're "not supposed to". Learn the rules before you break 'em, I always say!

However, with all that said, the MFT model appeals to me just as well. There are a lot of creative options that the MFT model offers. I like the idea of using a plethora of lens mount types, from my old, but lovely Canon FD manual fast primes, to exotic PL mount variants. The Metabones Speed Booster really intrigues me as well (even though I've heard optical quality might be a concern). I do wish the MFT model had active pins on it though, as this limits the amount of MFT lenses that can work with it. But in reality, my collection of MFT-compatible glass is manual anyway, so for me active pins are somewhat moot. This may not be the case for others however.

So yeah, a different answer for everyone, depending on your needs and prior investments.

BTW... word has it a powered/active MFT-to-EF adapter is coming that will work with *ANY* EF or EF-S lens ever made, and will support the IS protocol. Hopefully we'll get the full details at NAB. And if it works as it says it does, then this would render the BMCC EF model obsolete (figuratively speaking of course) as the BMCC MFT model would then handle all those EF/EF-S lenses as well. Fun times!

Doesn't Redrock already offer a mount like this, active EF to MFT? What company is working on the one you mentioned.

Hey Frank! Thank you! Wow, I had no idea you were in Bavaria. I'm actually half German (my mother is from Germany) and so I try to visit the country when possible, and throw in a few good laps around the Nürburgring for good measure! I've been tied into the BMW scene since the late 90's, mostly in the motorsports circles as both a participant and fan. So this documentary project is a treat on both the Bimmer side and the media production side. Thanks again!

CaptainHook wrote:Is that frame guides from the BMCC i'm seeing in your BTS pics Marco? Firmware update, or are the flanders providing them? Thanks. :)

Yeah, I wish I could say it was the BMCC generating them, but it's the FSI monitor. Lately I've been using white transparent masks instead of black so the BMCC text stays white instead of turning to gray (since the mask overlays the incoming output signal of the BMCC). Configurable aspect ratio masks is one of the many requests I've submitted to the BMCC dev team, but in reality, there are more pressing requests that need to be addresses; RRT/TRT display, audio meters, and in-camera formatting are my top three. These guys do hear our demands though and build their code solid once implemented. Even their beta firmware has always been solid for me. These guys are good.

Thank you, Joseph! Redrock does in fact make one, but the one I mentioned is from a different company (I don't think it's public who is making it). Unfortunately the Redrock one doesn't work with all EF/EF-S lenses nor does it work with IS, which is openly admitted by Redrock. Would be nice though if RR would update that though. I can't imagine sales are strong on that product for those reasons alone, but that's just a guess.
