rubber eye cup keeps falling off

PostThu Jul 27, 2017 7:46 am

The rubber eye cup keeps falling off, I suspect it the in and out of the camera-bag that is loosening it and then it is randomly falling off during a shoot. Is there a way of fixing it more firmly to the EVF?

If possible, between shots occasionally adjust it to make sure it's still seated properly. I used to be plagued with that problem, but if you keep an eye on it, it'll behave.

Great suggestion Rick! 'keep an eye on it!' orrr you could put a couple of holes each side... tie on some string... wear it as a pirate eye patch, problem solved!

Glad you enjoyed :D Does make you wonder though if thats how Captain Hook got his name...

Anywho back to the problem at hand... perhaps a spring loaded retaining clip (flat) like they use in lens filters, with tabs coming around to the front face (flat) for positioning/removal. That way it puts some pressure on the inside face of the eye piece holding it more firmly without interfering with your eye/cheek... might work?

Same problem. I've nearly lost it in a few locations where it fell off as I was walking and carrying the camera at my side. It's a damn pain in the ass to have to fuss with it all the time to make sure it stays attached.

Same. My solution was to buy an extra one, because I know one day I'm going to lose that eye cup.

rubber eye cup keeps falling off

PostSat Jul 29, 2017 3:54 am

Ditto Jamie's problem and Ivon's solution. My orange eye cushion helps find it on the ground and I have an unused blue cushion as backup. The rubber eye cup needs a more secure design.

Rick what eye cushion do you use?
Looking at the eyecup I think they could make the lower rubber circle a few mm wider in diameter it would still fit and it would hold better.

Could 1-3 tiny drops of super glue fasten the rubber eyecup to the EVF?

Or would gluing it create a problem?

I wouldn't want to put super glue anywhere near the EVF glass, I'm playing around with the idea of double sided tape or some snot.

Another mm would help. You don't want it on permanently because the element still gathers dust and probably dead skin and other icky things so you need to get at it to clean it regularly.

These are very popular and can be found in various dealers. I bought mine in Vancouver (only one place sells them).

Would small strips of velcro work?

I do not know if this idea will work in this case.

It depends on how much space you have on the barrel of the evf.
I use this idea when I wish to attach light things to the front of the lens.

I made a flexible velcro doughnut.(see photo)

I place the same sex velcro on the barrel and on the item that needs to be attached with the opposite sex on the doughnut.(insert joke here)

So tried out the Velcro with mixed results.

Got some stuff
Image

Cut a hole
Image

Made a ring
Image

Stuck it on
Image

Put Velcro on eyecup
Image

Wouldn't stay stuck to the rubber

Image

Turns out just the felt ring on the EVF makes the eyecup lock more solid on the EVF by itself.

Not how I intended to fix it but seems to do a great job :)

Buy an extra one... you WILL loose it.
I'm on my second one myself.

How about placing a small bag with a drawstring(stuff bag) over the eyepiece for transport.
This will also protect from dust etc.

If the eye cup falls off it cannot go far.

OK. Yesterday was a full on ENG shoot. Camera in and out of the bag, over my shoulder on the strap as we walked between locations chasing around politicians... eyecup stayed rock solid on EVF. So I'm thinking that the felt ring is a viable option to keep the eyecup on.

The problem stems from the fact the CNC'd channel in the eyepiece bezel and the matching eyecup rubber ring that sits in that channel are too small/shallow. Any lateral pressure on the eyecup with or without chamois easily deforms the rubber enough to make it pull out of the groove.

This has been a regular problem for me and I've have to retrace my steps many times, I've been lucky so far to always find it. My complaint and assessment of the problem was sent to the folks at BMD a long time ago but so far they refused to listen, acknowledge and action it.

Don't know why? :(

Basically 2 months since I put the felt ring on and the rubber eyecup has not fallen off once. :)

Hi,

Do you have any photo of your "felt ring" solution ?

Thanks
