Steadicams/stabiliser for Micro Cinema Camera ?

PostWed Aug 02, 2017 8:47 am

Hi

I am considering getting a Micro cinema camera, but I wanted to use a steadicam type stabiliser with it. I can't find anybody using one, and wondered if it was just too light to use with a steadicam?

I am in the UK, and amazon has various models, the Yelangu, Imorden, Glide gear, Neewer.

They all look very similar and have mixed reviews, its hard to know!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Your best bet is to try one out. See if there is a friendly hire company near you with one and ask if you could come do a camera test with it for a possible future gig. They are usually cool with that as you are not taking it anywhere. Just don't wast their time and if you do ever need to hire something show some loyalty.

Thanks but I doubt any of them will stock these relatively cheap models. There are plenty between £50 and £150, but then seems to jump up to the really pro stuff at above £500

I'm just surprised I can't find others using the micro cinema camera with a steadicam

BMMCC with cage, monitor, lens, QR plate and other stuff is usually about 1.5-2kg so I can recommend Wondlan MAG205 camera stabilizer. Inexpensive one with true microadjustments plate. There is also more expensive model carbon made.

Thanks

The one you mentioned doesnt seem to be available here. But it looks so similar to all the others Ive seen on Amazon UK. Do you think there is much difference between them all, they all seem so similar?

It's hard to know just from amazon reviews

The main difference is top plate design. If it is just sliding and locking like arca swiss it is very unusable to adjust camera balance. The top plate must have precise XY position adjustment mechanics. Similar to Macro Focusing Rails
Second main thing is ability to adjust middle part with handle up and down.
There are also some clones of that Wondlan model made by other brands. They have better quality components but 2 times expensive.

Thanks for the info

It seems like most of the cheap brands are made in Asian countries, and possible low quality, maybe some of them are the same with different labels!!

I have seen the C shaped versions too that seem much smaller, but I cant find out if they are better or worse than the Monopod style.

I'm sure after a few more days of obsession I will get to the answer.....ahh the internet really eats time when you are stuck researching gear!

C shaped versions are worse than the Monopod style because it is very hard to control them with left hand. They don't allow infinity rotate.

Folded legs-weights is nice option, but usually overpriced.

Large diameter monopod area under the fingers allows better control than thin one. Take attention to it.

And yes, research about about steadycams takes a lot of time because there are huge amount of different options and models.

Thanks, so I will rule out the C shaped ones.

Are there any brands other than Glidecam that are considered good quality?

At the moment I am mostly just finding all the cheap asian stuff

For asian brands it is better to check Aliexpress store - Wondlan or DF DIGITALFOTO CS-208C
also check Laing brand, it is on hi end side

also search http://cheesycam.com/tag/steadicam/ for some very useful steadycam tutorial videos and reviews.
and for sure take time to see this

Thanks, I seem to have narrowed it down to the Laing p4 or the Glidecam 1000.

They just seem better quality, and I dont want something that breaks in a few months

You should also consider the Steadicam Merlin2 for a light rig. Built and designed by the guy who invented the Steadicam.

I bought one recently, and am really happy with the performance once you get it set up right. They are still heavily discounted at B&H.

Thanks, wow those gadgets look crazy!

I actually settled on a Laing p4s, as it was on ebay for £100, and it seemed like a the best alternative to a glidecam but much cheaper.

Hopefully it will work alright!
