Music Video playback and shooting at what frame rate?

Hello,

I'm in pre-production for a music video.
The plan is to shoot on a BMPCC with Zeiss primes.

What is the suggested way for playback and frame rate to shoot so there is no sync issue in post?

Ultimately, I'd like to use an iPod for play back and shoot at 24FPS, is this a ridiculous?

I don't think it's ridiculous as iDevices don't seem to object to 24p, but I usually record at 30/60 fps for web viewing.

The frame rate won't have any impact during the shoot, but the audio sample rate might. Would you need a copy of the track at 48khz rather than 44.1khz? Your camera and timeline would be assuming 48khz. Perhaps your software would straighten everything out when importing files?

In my experience, even when everything is technically synched, subtle shifts are still needed during editing to *look* in synch. Most musicians seem to hang back a little and bringing the shots a couple of frames earlier seems to look right.

As far as I can see, 24/25fps is the standard frame rate for music videos with 'cinematic' ambition for the look.

Second Ben's comment: record in 48 KHz, forget 44.1 KHz unless you're pressing music CDs.

30/60 fps is the standard for web viewing but 24fps gives your footage a more "cinematic" look to it. I would shoot your music videos at 24fps. Playback on devices will play at 24/30 or 60fps so it doesn't matter how you record it. Just make sure that your bit rate for audio is sync. Either 44.1 or 48.
