Well, an external monitor would always be helpful, since the internal one is very weak.
With todays prices, you might as well pick one with a recorder, so you have a backup recording. If you are recording RAW, the external one could also record proxies for editing.
It all depends on how and what you shoot and if you get any ROI (emotional or financial).
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.
