would there be any advatange to having a external monitor recorder for the pocket camera? trying to decide which way to go, id like to have false color and a ssd to record to but is it worth the extra money? thanks

Well, an external monitor would always be helpful, since the internal one is very weak.

With todays prices, you might as well pick one with a recorder, so you have a backup recording. If you are recording RAW, the external one could also record proxies for editing.

It all depends on how and what you shoot and if you get any ROI (emotional or financial).

i like to shoot RAW thats why I thought it would be helplfull, i dont really need proxy as my computer handles everything very well unless there is a reason i dont know about which could be since im kinda new. what are some good recorders that hace ssd? i have seen the Atomos which arent to badly priced

I use Atomos and have no problems.

Got the first version Shogun, but use it in 4K too. Overkill for a Pocket, a Ninja would do.

Of course Leon, be my guest. Also the PixE is a Video Devices PixE-5 or 7 (depending on screen size), which is a division of Sound Devices, leading audio mixers/recorders for the broadcasting world.

I notice on these forums that relatively few people have a Blackmagic Video Assist 4K, instead choosing Atomos or other brands. Is there something I'm missing about the quality or reliability of the 7" VA that is causing people to lean away from it?

For me it was the feature set.

I got my PixE before the VA 4K came out. I had the original VA, did not like the slight green tint, lack of ability to correct tint, otherwise it was a sold little monitor recorder, the new added features are great.

Had the VA 4K been available, I still would have gone for the Pix, due to the audio recording Supoort/flexibility to set audio delay to match video, accessory audio mixer module, and most important, longer recording times and recording media choice. The VA4K in UHD mode can only record to a few 128GB SD cards, the Pix has 240 and 480GB Speed Drives which use mSata cards.

The Shogun can even be calibrated internally. I did mine and it has really good colors.

can all the atomos recorders record raw? id like to shot prores but i get much better results with raw.

No, and the camera has to be able to send raw DNG files out the SSD, which only the Ursa Mini Pro (in the BM lineup) dan do. The Pocket camera, which started this discussion, can only output FilmLog or Video Rec 709 video. Also, not mentioned, the BM VA HD is a good monitor/recorder for the Pocket camera, if you want to keep it small and simple.

sorry for not fully understanding, so i understand you can not use raw, would you be able to you the prores? i have a 7in genaric monitor now, it works but i was looking for one that has the extra exposure help and false color, i messed around with shooting prores today and im picking up on it so i dont mind using it to get longer recording space, thanks for the help.

Brian, you can only record Raw internally on the Pocket camera's SD card. External recording is Film Log or Video Rec 709, depending on how you set the HDMI output signal. The Video Assist, Atomos and Video Devices monitor recorders all can record ProRes codec. If you want to grade the final results, then set,the camera to output FilmLog and record it to the external video monitor recorder like the VA. All three have False Color, and other signal monitors to help with exposure.
