2k dci?

PostWed Sep 20, 2017 4:37 pm

Got a question..

I had a shoot last night with my um46k and mistakenly chose 2k DCI prores 444 instead of 2k 16:9 prores 444, didn't realize until near end of shoot but still continued shooting. Got home, dumped footage and started editing on premiere pro. Everything looks good. was a low light shoot everything at 1600

Is there a difference between DCI and the 16:9 option besides the resolution size 1152 vs 1080?

Hi Linell,

It’s just the vertical resolution that’s different, codec bit depth etc is the same

Looks good

2k dci?

Linell, excellent footage. Nice to see you are using 12bit ProRes. What will be the resolution of your deliverables? It looks like 2.4:1.

You may be aware, I’m shooting 4.6K 2.4:1 4608x1920 raw 3:1 for 2048x858 widescreen deliverables. That way I get over an hour per CFast 2 card. You might play with that too and see how you like it if that’s viable.

Oh nice Rick. I didn't realize 4444 was 12bit as well, thought its was only RAW. But yes, aprox. 2.4:1 delivery, went a little narrower on the letterbox. Majority of the things i shoot are in 2k 4444 or UHD HQ . I have a personal short film shoot starting tonight, ill experiment with the 4.6k if memory is forgiving

2K DCI scope is 2.39:1, not 2.4:1. Marginal difference, but still.

2k dci?

PostThu Sep 21, 2017 4:39 pm

Krishna, that’s correct. The only options available with the BMD 4.6K sensor and Resolve 14 I believe are to capture in 2.4:1 and deliver in 2K 2.39:1. An perfect match as you point out, but hopefully tolerable.

Did you have any suggestion how that should be managed considering I’m capturing 4608x1920 to output 2048x858? Should I be cropping the sides from 4608 to 4582 before bringing into the timeline in Resolve? I’ve just left it to Resolve with my scaling option set to “Scale entire image to fit.” Thinking about it, any perfect circle filmed is going to be about a half percent distorted perhaps.

I also tried “Scale full frame with crop” and that does crop on the left and right sides. That would keep a circle a circle I suppose. But I prefer not having that loss of AOV. Is there a recommended ‘best practices’ option in this case?

Edit: okay I changed it to “Scale full frame with crop” and will take the half a percent smaller horizontal field of view just in case I’m ever filming a perfectly round object... which I can’t ever recall.

To be clear, it doesn’t put any blanking anywhere, it just expands my horizontal image so it scales the same amount horizontally as vertically. Vertical is identical with either option. I lose seeing a tiny bit to the left and right, but I won’t lose any sleep over that.

Even the best scaling algorithm is reducing quality to some extent, even worse with tiny amounts of difference. I'd rather crop or blank.
