ETTR isn't a good way to handle exposure, it's just a way to shoot with as little of a look as possible.
It's far better to get the skin tones right. If you're using log encoding and you get the skin tones right, then in most situations there's very little risk of clipping other than in specular highlights. Plus, that gives you matching exposure on skin tones from one shot to the next, reducing the amount of work required in post.
