"2 Days" Feature Horror Film I'm DPing with UMPro 4.6k

PostSat Dec 09, 2017 5:55 pm

I'd like to share some grabs of the feature film "2 Days" that I'm DPing in Dallas for director Patrick Johnson. I'll post some lighting breakdowns eventually but I won't be able to do that until we wrap. I'll be happy to answer any questions, but to start, we're shooting with the Ursa Mini Pro with Cooke s4 primes and an Ursa Mini 4.6k EF with Leica R lenses and a Sigma 18-35 (which is waaaaay too sharp for me but it's what we have).

These grabs are directly from the SmallHD 502 with my own custom LUT for this project. No other color correction has been applied. My custom LUT is a simple LUT with just contrast, saturation, and a custom S curve.

As I mentioned, I'll be happy to answer any questions. I'll keep adding to this post as I can.

Thanks Rick. I hope so lol

I want to post lighting breakdowns when we finish production. Hopefully I'll be doing that over Christmas/New Years.

Here's the lighting setup. M18's on the right through Rosco 250. Camera on a Fisher 11 on tracks for a push in. Fog tubes all along the right and left side of frame for drifting fog.

Pretty impressed with how well the UMP handles tough dynamic range situations like this. We were driving in and out of sun/shade with a slash of sun coming in the car (I would have liked to diffuse it but no process trailer on this day so we went handheld and had the actress drive around) and if you nail the exposure, nothing clips. Of course there are situations which it'll never work but yesterday while doing this, I was impressed by how much detail we were able to hold.

No exposure change between these two frames.

Hey Paul!
This grabs look amazing! In my opinion a nice proof that a cinematic image is mostly based on the setting and lighting.
But i also wonder how gorgeous your preview LUT is!
Could you share it with us? That would be amazing!
Thanks and Cheers,
Juri

I can share it but to be honest, it's not the LUT that makes these images look the way they do. It's really a basic LUT that pushes the blacks down, moves the highlights up slightly, adds a tiny bit of saturation, and a custom S-curve. It's really nothing special. There are no color transforms. Even with the LUT, you'd probably still have to push the blacks down a little more for them to sit at 0.
