Video Assist 5" dies in cold weather

PostMon Dec 11, 2017 1:40 pm

My Video Assist 5" died in cold weather on three occasions. It was not very cold, about -1 or -2 celsium. After 15 minutes of warming inside the car, the monitor goes back to normal.

Is that normal?

Thanks

Although I agree that temperature is that cold, it does exceed the limits of the operational range of the device.

Powering was by batteries, and when it first died, I switched to D-tap. No go.

It just needs 15 mins in a warmer place to kick in.

The interesting thing was, that another monitor, cheap chinese brand, was working fine ;)

So what is the operational limit of the BMVA?

Batteries and cold weather are always issues.. And the LP6 batteries don't even last very long in normal conditions.. So the cold will cut run time in 2 or 3..

Temperature specs are on the website and manual..
Environmental Specifications
Operating Temperature

0° to 40° C (32° to 104° F)

Storage Temperature
-21° to 45° C (-6° to 113° F)

Relative Humidity
0% to 90% non-condensing

Thank you all for the replies, I had no idea the operating temp was not meant to go below the 0.

I guess I have to bring 2 monitors on set and switch between scenes ;)

Doesn't sound normal. I've used 5" VA with batteries through nordic winters on Ronin+UM4.6 without problems. For last bigger shoot I carried 12 batteries daily on a 12 day winter shoot. Coldest days started at -24C, no hiccups with VA. Ronin was another story..

Wow -24C sounds great, but then, why is the operating temp officially listed as 0 ?

How could I know, if my unit is bad?

I don't think your unit is bad.. But i do think Jukka had more luck. Pushing the specs like that.. Also depends on how you use it.. If booted up for the first time i a warm enviroment or with a protection against the cold (Blacket or something) It will be much more likely it will start up. And keeping itself warm with the heat produced while running the screen and recorder..

So depends on a lot of factors. But pushiong it to -24 degrees while 0 is specified is great but not guaranteed at all ;)
