BMCC Firmware 1.3 Update Now for NAB?

PostMon Apr 08, 2013 6:02 pm

After the lovely news about the two new cameras, was also hoping for an update with the current owners of the BMCC - especially now that we know that compressed CinemaDNG and a few other new options are available on the new cameras?

If there would be the option to read out 1080p ProRes of a Super 16 crop of the sensor... would be great. We have some nice Super 16 glass and would love to use it in ProRes mode. Technically there should be no problem do do so (the pocket cam seems to work like that)

It seems that BMD is still working on the firmware for the BM pocket / 4K and there are still lots to do. The firmware update for the BMCC will be a side product on the basis of the other firmwares. So IMHO we have to wait some more time until they progressed further with the new cameras.

That assumes there's no crossover in tech. To a certain that where the parts are similar they will reuse. Adding meters to the BMCC would be work that the 4k would certainly benefit from (and the pocket to but that differs in inputs).

Up to 1080P ProRes is a limitation of the codec, not the camera.

I find it perplexing that BM has figured out how to deliver 4K for $4k and cram RAW capture into a cellphone sized device, but cannot figure out how to program simple audio meters. :geek:

The thing i don't understand is that is possible to record 4k on prores on the BMPC, so i think 2k or 2.k is possible. The Alexa can record 2k in prores.

Cheers

+1 for cropmarks. 2.39:1 and 1.85:1. Should be super easy to implement.

I believe it has been stated elsewhere that the ProRes specification supports up to 5K.
