Sound issues using mains and SD cards

PostTue Dec 19, 2017 7:31 pm

Yesterday I brought my URSA mini pro 4.6K - firmware 4.5 - on a production for the first time for recording an interview.

First thing, I plugged the camera to the mains and recorded to the SD card, using a radio mic. There was a popping sound going very low all the time.

So I used a Vlock battery. The popping sound was gone but a very low kind of clicking - think like a metronome - was going on this time.

Then I finally used my SSD recorder instead of the SD cards and all the noises where gone...

I used my radio mic for many productions in any cameras and never had an issue.

I'd love to use my camera on mains and record my interviews on SD cards so it's easier to pass them to a client.

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions!

Here's a thread about a similar interference issue that may, or may not be limited to SD card recording on the Ursa Mini Pro.

You should contact BMD support about the problem. And please do let us know what you hear back.

This is what I got back from BM support:

"From listening to the audio, I can confirm that this is behaviour which is known about on the Ursa Mini Pro cameras and has been escalated to the development team. We don't have a timescale on when this will be addressed as this is not information that we receive however if we do hear anything I will let you know.

In the meantime you will find that this behaviour can be alleviated by using a -20dB pad or by using a line in input."

The beeping is gone, but using the pad do increase the hiss...
I just further tested and I'm going to send my files to a sound recordist friend of mine and see what his comments are and let you know here.

Recording on SSD seems to be the work around for the moment.
