Ursa Mini 4.6k, Final Cut Pro, and LUTs

PostThu Jan 04, 2018 2:34 pm

I love my Ursa Mini 4.6k and I also love editing with Final Cut Pro, but I'm trying to figure out the best "default" LUT to use with this camera.

In Final Cut Pro 10.4, there are two built in LUTs: Blackmagic Design Film and Blackmagic Design Film 4k, but neither of those seems quite right (when I apply them the blacks and whites get pushed really hard).

Final Cut Pro 10.4 will let me load any LUTs I want and I know there are hundreds of LUTs out there designed to give different looks.

But, is there an official (or somewhat official) LUT that just gives a nice clean look with pure blacks and whites?

Thanks a lot,

Chris

No answers yet.

Am I asking the question badly or is the answer someplace else that I should be looking?

Thanks for any help,

In my experience, unless you're carefully monitoring with a custom LUT on set during your shoot (and in best case you have a DIT on hand to feedback), then any LUT you use in post is just going to be a rough starting point for your grade. There's no magic bullet here.

That said, there's a few custom LUT offered for free from Captain Hook amongst others which may be useful to add to your collection.

Captain Hook is the rockstar here with LUTs. His BMD to 709 for the Cinema Camera and Production Camera have helped me tremendously. I know he has some for the Ursa, but I don't think he's released them publicly.

I have many friends with the UMP that are using this from Frank Glencairn:

While FCPX 10.4 allows you to apply a lut at the clip level in the inspector, this is good for dailies or string outs. When you actually get to doing the work, you will want to use the LUT effect so you can use a color adjustment before it.

For the 4,6K, Kholi's Comet Color LUTs are quite good:

If you prefer film stock based LUTs, I've yet to find anything better and cleaner than the Koji LUTs:

If you need something free, here's a LUT I created that matches the REC709 transform that ACES puts on 4.6K FIlm v3:

+1 If your goal is a one click solution in FCPX, this is very good advice.

I use the Kholi Comet color luts and the Daniel Peters ones. I only use a Rec 709 lut in camera and in grading like using the more pronounced luts for a quick turnaround.
