Need some advice on my Matte box

PostThu Apr 11, 2013 11:31 pm

OK so I just recieved this matte box in the mail: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/741110-REG/Genus_GL_GWMC_GWMC_Wide_Angle_Matte.html

Seemed like a decent deal and there were good reviews on it. On the page it says
Adapter rings not included / Adapter for 12/15mm bars sold separately (GL GSP-400-038)

I also bought the Adapter for 12/15mm bars and I when I read
Wide Angle Matte Box with 105mm Diameter Attachment
under the tab What's in the Box I mistakenly thought that meant that there were 105mm threads on the back of the matte box and that I would just need to purchase the adapter to connect my lenses to said threads. So I purchased a 77-105 step up ring.

(I wanted to have both mounting options for different situations)

However, there were no threads on the back of the matte box and when I use rails and the Adapter for 12/15mm bars the matte box doesn't come up high enough, and I have the camera lowered as much as it will go. I would have been nice if the adapter had a height adjustment.

So after all that here are my two questions:

Is there another adapter or maybe a better rail set up that will allow me to use my matte box...on rails?

As far as connecting the matte box directly to the lens I think that this is what I need: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/544807-REG/Genus_GL_GARD_GARD_Lens_Adapter_Ring.html

I am not sure though and if this is what I need what is the thread size? 105? It's kind of vague on that.

I am a little confused and really don't want to purchase something only to find out that it's not what I need. Thanks for any help you guys can give.

The basic Genus matte box is great. However, for just $267 more than what you paid at B&H, you can get their PV Advanced Matte Box Kit that normally sells for $1,333.00 for just $667.00 on sale that is ready to mount on rails and has full french flags, swing away arm (key to fast lens changes), two filter holders and flexible universal lens doughnut. I bought one during this "display" sale and it was NEW. You will need a rail mount system. I bought the Ikan BMCC $99 mounting system, which works great.

As long as you bought from B&H within thirty days, they will take it back if you decide to go this route.
