Only one slot works with eSATA adapter, SOLVED – KIND OF

So I got me a CFast to eSATA adapter, a Startech enclosure and a USB power cable to my V-mount brick.
It works very well with the second slot (the one to the rear), I can record up to 30 fps in uncompressed RAW and 60 fps in 3:1 in full size on a Samsung 850 Pro.

But no luck in the first slot, whatever format I use it stops after 5 seconds 9 frames, even with HDTV in ProRes 422. Anybody seen such behavior? The cable from the adapter is pretty short, only about 30cm.

And, no I don't yet have a CFast card around to try the slot with that.

I have the exact same issue with mine. Slot 2 works no problem, Slot 1 drops frames constantly. Curious what the reason is.

I was using cfast to esata adapter cable with startech enclosure over a year only from slot 1 (UM4.6K)- no issues, now i am using cctech double ssd enclosure using both slots - also no issues

Which cable do you use, Krzysztof?

And to Spencer: does a CFast card work in that slot?

I unfortunately don't have any CFast cards to try.

My current UMP is a replacement from Blackmagic due to some other issues with my first. On that first camera I had the same issue as well, but inverted. Slot 1 would handle anything up to the SSD's write speed flawlessly, but slot 2 had issues.

I'll see if I can get my hands on a CFast card to to troubleshoot.

Thanks, Spencer, I should get one tomorrow.

I have the same Starteck/Samsung setup for my mini 4.6k and have the same issue. Slot 1 works fine but slot 2 will drop frames. I mainly shoot 3:1 RAW 60fps.

And both slots work fine with CFast?

Not sure. I only use SSD's and don't own any Cfast.

So, I finally got me a Transcend 128 GB CFX650 card. The result is encouraging, but not 100% perfect:

– My camera is OK, since the card works flawlessly in both slots
– It records up to 30 fps uncompressed RAW 4.6K
– The eSATA adapter also records up to 30 fps RAW on a Samsung 840EVO SSD, but only in slot 2 (the rear one)
– If I have the card in slot 1 and the adapter in slot 2, I can record in parallel up to 60 fps without a hiccup

It's a good solution for me, but don't expect to have two adapters running in both slots without testing first.

BTW, my CFast to eSATA cable is from the Russian Ebay seller Videotechshop, whom I can wholeheartedly recommend for European buyers (Americans have their own sellers with similar prices). Good communication, cable length made to order, well manufactured.
I'm quite sure the limitation it's not his fault, when looking at the experiences from others. It seems to be critical to extend these slots, which is not too surprising considering the enormous speeds of data transfer and the resulting frequencies.

Oh, and it only works with the StarTech enclosure (as recommended by others), an ICY box didn't work here.
