You mean Jupiter 36B? If so, you should take in account that it's a lens for wide-film camera (60x60mm). While the Jupiters are Soviet classics and are traditionally quite good optically this specific lens is very heavy and quite difficult to control. Perfect bokeh. Dislikes a side light, needs a hood. ARSAT model is rumored to have multicoating.

I do not have the Arsat 250mm you are interested in, but I do have 4 Russian lenses PL mount that I've managed to find in pristine condition:

MIR 1B f2.8/37mm, Helios 44-2 f2/58mm, Jupiter 9 f2/85mm and Jupiter 37A f3.5/135mm

My next lens will be the Jupiter 21m 200mm.

I bought these for a particular 70's themed project and have been impressed by the quality of the pictures they make. I use a matte box and put IR cut and variable ND filters on the lenses.

I also love my Russians, from the Mir 37mm all the way to a Tair 135.

You'll need to consider two points:
– QC was lousy at times and later many may have fiddled with their samples. So expect to try a few until you find a really good one.
– They did much better in optics than in coating, plus coatings come off more easily. Expect lots of flare, but that can be nice as we all know.

Sharpness can be quite good, just contrast is low. There was a reason why they received a lot of recognition at the Brussels World Expo even in the worst times of the cold war.

You'll find a very informative thread over there:

Ironglass Adapters are really great to deal with if you are looking for M42 PL adapters and Russian lenses. I've bought several items from them and they are super with responses and customer service. They accidentally shipped me the wrong adapter and they immediately sent me the correct adapter along with two more adapters free; and they paid the shipping from Ukraine to the US. Highly recommended. Anyone venturing into obtaining Russian PL mount lenses these are the guys to start with.

You will like both of them. My first lens was the Mir 1B 37mm and I tested it out in all different lighting conditions indoors and out in harsh sunlight.

I just used the Helios 44-2 to shoot a reel for an actor who wanted a little vintage feel and we even grabbed a few raw dng's into Photoshop for him to print out head-shots. He loved the look the lens gave.

Bottom line is these Russian lenses are really nice and fun for the small price. You can always rent a high speed kit when sharpest images are needed.

Just to note that I understand that the Russian lenses that are marked with a pentagon symbol with CCCP inside it are supposed to be the highest QA lenses that were put out for international export. I have a Jupiter 37A 135mm marked with the symbol from 1985 and it looks and works like brand new and is built like a tank.

2 x Russian vintage lenses. 58mm and a 37mm from Ironglass adapters.
4 x redheads, 2 x soft lights, a smoke machine and crazy "vintage" LUT (original footage a lot cleaner)... flare intentional :)

I have a Jupiter 9 f2/85mm PL mount and I'm quite happy with it. I use it stopped down at 2.8 or 4 and the clarity is quite good; and it is even very usable wide open if I need it. My lenses are not the anamorphic's mods that you can get from Ironglass.

The attached close up test still is a grab from Resolve 14 with levels and contrast adjusted. TIFF to a heavily resized compressed jpeg. Shot with big Ursa, Jupiter 9 f2/85mm wide open at f2 in a low light room which had some window spill coming in from across the room. What you see is as it looks sitting on the shelf.

Does anyone know online resources for instructions to repair/fix Russian vintage lenses?

I have a Heilios-44M-6 where the aperture blades did not re-open. After a first attempt to fix this, infinity focus is now off.

I really like this lens and would give fixing one more go with an appropriate instruction.

thanks in advance,

I have a Hoya 28mm M42 lens. The aperture didn't reopen (quite a standard M42 situation). After multiple attempts to use alcohol to rectify the problem I just removed both lens blocks and washed the aperture assembly in gasoline. Of course, I lost half of helicoid grease in process. Also, I drilled a pair of pits in front ring nut for convenience and removed an aperture control since it's never needed.

The helicoid is usually multithreaded. Unscrew the helicoid and remember the angle when it goes off. Then turn it one thread in the same (unscrew) direction and screw it back. Check the infinity focus. Repeat until success.

In the future, always mark the position of helicoid when it goes off.

There are reviews of this lens, for instance,

http://www.vintagelensesforvideo.com/25 ... ine-zooms/

And the footage there is too soft and dissatisfying from my amateur point of view, but you should know that I prefer absolute sharpness over the cinematic look so you may like the softness it gives. If so, I have a stills lens with similar softness which is $18 + p&p and it's dissatisfying for the same reason:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Promaster-Sp ... SwFqVZuBVn

Be warned: This lens is so heavy that if you turn it down it sets a max zoom due to it's own weight. Also, you may remove the macro limiter and then it's useful to shoot butterflies and other bugs from safe distance.

Has anybody tried to use some of these Russian beauties on a BMPCC or BMMCC with a BMPCC-EF Speed Booster? Somebody did it with an Helios 44-2 on a BMCC:

I think I read somewhere that the Nikon Speed Booster is a bit more problematic somehow (I think I read about problems with focus), but the EF one should be more versatile, so maybe with a M42-EF adapter we can enjoy some of these great lenses with the benefits of the Speed Booster on our BM cams?

I tried many lenses with M42-MFT noname speedbooster (not original) on BMPCC. But they are all too long focus for my taste.

Helios 44-2 (USSR) - Image is ideal. Tricky aperture, clicks while focusing.
Jupiter 37A (USSR) - Image is ideal.
Sirius MC Auto Zoom 28-70 (Japan) Image is near-ideal (cold tones). This my favorite M42 lens. Looks parfocal. Quite a funny computer that keeps the aperture constant.
Prakticar MC Auto Zoom 28-70 - Image is near-ideal (Chromatic aberration). Remounted to M42, needed to machine the body. There are right and left models, I have both. Looks parfocal.
Hoya HMC Wide Auto 28mm - image is ideal
Promaster Spectrum 7 28-210. Too soft. Remounted to M42, remount is reversible. Modified to macro tele zoom. Tuned to parfocal with shims, no idea how to tune officially.

You could use the M42-EF adapter (preferably with the focus confirm chip) with EF speed booster or EF camera (it's exactly what I am going to do when I obtain an Ursa of any model since M42 is my base mount)

If you have money for Zeiss CP2 then you have no incentive for Russian lenses just because Zeiss is more prestigious. So there should be no people who actually have compared them.

I have a link to the relevant article but I am afraid that it could be not polite, so on request only.

From the said link. My translation, not polite, you have been warned. Quote begin.

Necroglasser. ... For mirrorless cameras Helios [44] as other M42 optics is not too actual, but you can install old lenses from rangefinders with M39 thread which gives +50 points to hipsteredness of photos. The people's lens in this segment is Industar 61L/D, standard lens of FEDs, popular but not needed for mirrorers and so extremely cheap though it's better optically than Helios [44] with it's curved field. Quote end

From me: Be warned that there are at least 2 kinds of M39 with different FFD, one of them is for rangefinders and the other for reflex. The FED lenses have a short FFD and could be adapted to MFT but not for Speedbooster and not for EF. It looks that it's possible to adapt it to PL but lots of machining is required since the focusing ring should fit into PL adapter recess.

While I share the criticism regarding that hype for vintage lenses by hipsters, in general it's a "horses for courses" thing. IMHO:
– If you need a 50's or 60's look, go Russian or Minolta MC (latter won't fit EF or PL with rare exceptions)
– If you need a 70's look, go Canon FD or Minolta MD (same here)
– If you need 80's or 90's, go Zeiss C/Y (fits EF by adapter)
– If you need contemporary, well…
Maybe AI can help you. Or make you obsolete.

The Jupiter 36 250mm is a medium format lens. It is a telephoto lens if that is what you want. It does have a nice image, but as with other Russian telephoto lenses they are built like tanks and are on the heavy side. The price is good considering the Pentacon Six medium format to PL adapters are about $100 alone.

I was looking at the Jupiter 36 myself, but ended up getting the Jupiter 21m 200mm which is a 35mm SLR lens but is slightly heavier and longer than the Jupiter 36, and it also has very nice images and color reproduction.

I don't think you will find this with a PL mount. It's a Helios 40-2 f1.5/85mm. I don't know of any adapters being currently made that will work with the Helios 40-2.

If you are looking for an 85mm you can find the Jupiter 9 f2 with adapters, which I posted a screen grab above.

Yes, and they cover the BMPCC sensor apparently! Only the Mir 11M seems to vignette a little bit when stopped down. I guess at higher stops it should be very usable.

For anyone contemplating vintage lenses here's a basic set of Russian lenses I put together. The M42 to PL adapters for these are readily available. These lenses all make great images. I was lucky to find them all in pristine condition.

The Mir 1B 37mm is exceptionally nice and won the Brussels Grand Prix of lenses award in 1958. They are a copy of Zeiss Jenna Flektogon and has a really nice image. These are an absolute bargain for the images they make.

The Jupiter 37A uses an un-threaded adapter with a larger inside diameter and uses set screws to fasten it to the rim. You first remove the M42 set screw mount then fasten the PL adapter. All the others are threaded screw on adapters.

I'm also experimenting with the Jupiter 37A/Tair 11 PL adapter for use on other vintage M42 mount lenses. After some research I found that a T2 adapter, which has a threaded 42mm center, can be used as the center of the Jupiter 37A PL mount. The T2 adapter can be filed/ground down so that it can be inserted into the center of Jupiter 37A PL mount set screw adapter. I used this method successfully to adapt a vintage Soligor 180MM M42 over to PL mount. It works great and focuses to infinity. The Soligor isn't a Russian lens obviously but after comparing them with the Russians it matches up nicely to them. I will add the Soligor in another post.

Anything that has PL mount will command more than $200: branding, mount complexity and hopefully, precision. The image circle covered by this lens at this aperture is nothing to sneeze about. Imagine the output with a decent focal reducer/speed booster for a smaller size sensor.

You can buy certain M42 mount lenses that have readily available adapters for $30-$100. Then buy the screw on adapters separately that go for $25-$50 and you can have a nice vintage PL mount lens for under $100. I did this with 3 of the lenses in my vintage kit and am researching a couple more to add this way.

Yes you can get good results with this lens. Being it is f3.5, outdoors will be fine in daylight, other low light situations, as indoors, you'd have to most likely add some light to get optimum exposure.

I do not own the Arsat or Jupiter 36 which is about the same I believe, but I have seen images from them as I was researching vintage lenses. They are not tack sharp as the newer lenses but really do make very nice images. Do a search for images made with this lens. There are many photo sites that will have user images. As I've previously stated, the Arsat Jupiter 36 is a medium format lens. I've seen ratings for these at 8.3 out of 10 stars for sharpness.

It's not Russian, but it may be helpful to someone looking for vintage lenses. Here is a Soligor f3.5 180mm lens I converted from M42 to PL mount. There was a little work involved but isn't hard to accomplish. I've attached pictures of the process which worked out very well.

1. The center piece of the PL adapter is a ground down T2 to Nikon adapter. It's threaded inside is 42mm the same as a M42 mount. You use this as the spacer for the inside of a PL adapter made for Russian Jupiter 37A and Tair 11. Very simple and works like a charm. This is the hardest part of the process because you have to carefully grind down the outer portion of the T2 ring and not damage the inside threads while doing so. It just took patience and small increments until it fit smoothly inside the Pl adapter.

2. You will see that I drilled small small holes on the outside of the ground down T2 adapter so the set screws of the PL adapter will tighten below the surface of the PL adapter. Otherwise it won't fit in the PL mount of your camera. If it isn't countersunk the set setscrews will keep it from seating properly.

3. Screw the T2 center onto the m42 mount lens and place the PL adapter over that. Make sure it seats all the way down. Tighten the setscrews and it's done.

After some sleuthing I found out that this particular Soligor 180mm lens model was made by Tokina. Several Japanese manufacturers made them for Soligor. The serial numbers start with the code to which manufacturer made the lens. From what I've read, this Soligor/Tokina was supposed to be a very good quality made lens. I was very pleased with the images it made with the Ursa 4K.

First photo is the finished PL mount on the Soligor 180 and the 2nd photo is the lens with just the M42 threads shown. BTW I used an old used PL adapter to experiment with different lens, so it looks beat up. I have a brand new adapter to put on now that the T2 center piece fits well.

These are 16mm format movie camera lenses.

Yes, and they cover the BMPCC sensor apparently! Only the Mir 11M seems to vignette a little bit when stopped down. I guess at higher stops it should be very usable.

In the set I have, all three lenses in the set cover the S16 sensor of the BMPCC without vignetting.

12mm f/2
20mm f/2
50mm f/2

They do have a beautiful character - very vintage, low contrast and warm - and as a plus are really small and light weight. Definitely not for every project, but great value for money if you can get a set for $200-300 including an adaptor from RAF.

Great insight gentlemen.
I own a BM mini 4.6k PL mount camera.
Due to my low budget and creative needs I'm seriously considering a set of Russian PL primes from IronGlass or a similar supplier?
My concerns in regards to these lenses are the lack of sharpness? Being to soft? And there slow speeds. 3.5. 2.8. etc etc.
Any experiences with using these Russian lens in a narrative film and or especially using them in low light?

Any opinions etc would be wonderful to hear about.

Thank you all.

I have the Mir-1b 37mm f2.8, Helios 44-2 58mm f2, Jupiter-9 85mm f2, and incoming is the Jupiter-37A 135mm f3.5.
It's hard to describe the sharpness of these lenses, in a way. I am usually stopping them down a stop or two anyway, to try to get some sharpness, but i'll post a video tomorrow of some footage i took using the Ursa Mini Pro and the Mir-1b. I shot it almost completely wide open, using NDs.
