SD card settings

PostMon Mar 19, 2018 7:21 pm

I am curious which setting on the BlackMagic Design allows for the most storage on an SD card? My camera gets 24 hrs to a card (mts file) however I'm currently getting only 56 mins per card on the Black Magic.

Thanks for the help.

You don't say which of the Blackmagic cameras you're using, but in general ProRes Proxy will give you the longest recording time. That's also the most compressed, though, so it's less "editable" than, say, ProRes HQ. See this page for a primer: http://www.4kshooters.net/2015/01/26/ch ... r-project/

And if your current camera records massively compressed AVCHD, please understand that the BM cameras are completely different in recording quality and space needed on the card.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

BM cameras record ProRes and some DNxHD, and the bit rate is determined by the resolution the camera is set to HD (1080p24 vs 1080p60), UHD or in the case if the UM full 4K, the higher the resolution and frame rate, the more memory space is needed to record one minute of video. Also the codec selected (ProRes 4.4.4 vs 4.2.2 or DNxHD ) will determine recording times on a SD card.

Their are no SD card settings as such, the SD card you use (from the BM approved list) determines which camera settings you can use. As previously mentioned, PrRes Proxy is the most compressed, and will give the longest recording times on a given card, but the results will not be as good as ProRes 4.2.2 or ProRes HQ.
