Any plans for a new Video Assist monitor?

PostSun Apr 08, 2018 1:51 am

All the NAB hype is about new cameras and new software, but I have a rather common request in mind.

That is for a new Video Assist monitor.

The main reason for such a request is, that it should be daylight viewable.

And of course it should support all of the advanced functions of the current 4K VA.
Will be great to have the ability (regulator) to be powered by 16V D-tap, instead of 12V that is on the current model.
Maybe the option for Sony NP-F batteries along with the Canon LP-E6 as seen at SmallHD models?

What other lacking features of the current BMVA do you want to get in a future model?

And does BM have any plans for a new field monitor?

You know you just made a perfect discription of the Atomos Shogun Inferno

Which btw does support Prores RAW now.. With 1500 Nits screen which is one of the brightest versions out there.. ;) Has HDR support and DNxHR.
Does show you the playlist of all files on disk. And you are able to choose and playback..

Don't get me wrong. I'm real Pro BMD.. I have owned a few VA5's Had a try at the VA7.. And sold them off to buy the Atomos recorders as they did what i needed it to do. And also because i was in realneed of 12G-SDI video input..
Wish BMD really steps up with software and fix a few issues in the FW..

The current VA takes 14.4v vlock batteries fine

A regular V-lock battery, can go up to 16V when fully charged. The circuits of the VA will start to burn somewhere above 15V. So while 14.4V is fine, using a fully charged battery will be gambling.

Not true, if you overpower a device, like the VA, the DC to DC power supply will instantly fry or cut power on a overpower situation, like a fuse. It will not slowly fry the circuits. I have connected, several times a full charged AB Go,d Mount battery via DTap and did not harm the VA in any way. That said, I would use a DTap 12VDC regulated cord to be on the safe side, and reduce heat issues from making the DC-DC power Converter work harder with higher voltage. ;)

Ok that scenario seems better, but still the result will be the same - the VA will be out for repairs and the shoot compromised.

My local BM dealer, had informed me, about several cases of "fried" VAs, that is why I prefer to stay safe.

Not sure if there is a difference in the output voltage between AB gold and any standard V-mount battery. Nevertheless, I measured my battery at 16V when fully charged.

The AB was about 15.5 VDC fully charged. But, I agree with you, use a regulated DTap cable, best insurance. IndiePro makes one, BMD 12-VDC DTap cable, originally released for the first BM Mini Converters.
