BMPCC4K: 6 stops above mid grey?

PostMon Apr 09, 2018 10:23 pm

I copied this chart from Grant's presentation. It looks like it shows that @ ISO 800, this camera delivers 6+ stops above neutral grey. Is that correct?

It looks like at ISO 800, it has 13 stops of DR, with a +1 bias, meaning 6 stops above and 7 stops below neutral grey.

Yes exactly. If this chart is accurate. That's getting pretty close to 7 stops above neutral grey of the Alexa cameras. Again, if it's true, one would expect to get superior highlight handling.

Funny how the sensor is responding to different ISO values !
With the Ursa Mini, the higher the ISO, the more dynamic range in the highlights, and here it's reversed.

Or I'm reading this completely wrong ?

I thought the same thing. I don’t know how accurate this chart is.

Maybe one of the Tech moderators from BM could answer this?

You are reading this wrong, indeed.
ISO 200 has the lowest range in the highlights, which goes up until ISO800. At ISO1600 the camera rides at another gain circuit and it begins again with having the lowest range, which goes up.

That’s a very useful chart which will help folks understand that really low light requires very careful consideration of the dynamic range in the scene. I like ISO 200 through 6400 based on this paper armchair evaluation, but will be fun to test with the real camera.

Robert, have you drawn any conclusions at this point, especially after seeing the sample stills on the EOSHD forum?

Rick, not really. I will draw my conclusions only after I will have received my preorderd BMPCC4k.
My plan is to use this camera as a sidekick to my Canon XF305 when my UM46k kit is too much to take with me. And I'd like to replace my DJI OSMO with this camera and a bigger gimbal - 4k with 50p is exactly what I needed.

Robert off topic,
Do you think that DJI OSMO+ is a better choice than go pro for my wife to shoot private clips? She needs a better replacement for the phone camera (better quality).

Daniel, the OSMO (+) can deliver nice results in HD when there is enough light and with the right settings. With ISO 400 and upward the image quickly begins to fall apart. It's 4k is ugly compared to my iPhone 6s.
