How much footage can I fit on ssd?

Hi everyone!! New to the forum here and have a basic question that I know blackmagic lists in their faqs, but have heard conflicting news. I have a 480g ssd. I will be shooting in prores. How much footage will card hold?

Thanks!

ProRes 220 comes out to be about 1.6GB per minute.

Here's the info I have:

For the original Cinema Camera:
- 480 GB SSD, recording RAW = approximately 50 minutes
- 480 GB SSD, recording ProRes = approximately 4 hours

For the Production Camera 4K:
- 480 GB SSD, recording ProRes = approximately 60-70 minutes
- 480 GB SSD, recording CinemaDNG RAW = approximately 60-70 minutes

For the Pocket Cinema Camera:
- 128 GB card, recording ProRes = approximately 70-80 minutes
- 128 GB card, recording RAW = approximately 30 minutes

... and moved this thread to Cinematography.

So you are saying the ProRes will take more space as on BMCC and equal the space of the new compress raw? Those are some huge ProRes files.

For the Production Camera 4K, the website says "880 Mbps using Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)"

Trying to confirm: Will shooting 1080p on the 4K camera will be lower bitrate and fit more than 60-70 minutes on a 480GB SSD? Does it use the same 220Mbps ProRes that the Pocket Cinema Camera does at 1080p? Or still 880Mbps @ 1080p?

220 x 4 = 880

the "4K" is 4 times the size as 1080p spatially.
so you should be able to fit 1080p from the 4K camera at the same rate as with the BMCC or about 4 - 5 hours on a 480GB ssd

Yep, that's been my exact assumption. I'm just trying to confirm that it matches Christine's numbers since the website doesn't explicitly list anything other than the 880Mbps bitrate.

According to my calculations the ProRes is only like a 2.2:1 compression ratio, so judging by the numbers Christine has given it would imply that the Cinema DNG compression is probably around 2.5:1*, which is awesome.

*numbers based on 1080p @ 24p, 10bit ProRes, 12bit DNG. I am more than willing to show my math, but it tends to kill threads.

If the ProRes and CinemaDNG RAW storage capacity on the 4k camera are the same is there any reason to use ProRes, or is the current ProRes not yet optimised for 4k?

don't want to sound picky -

but ProRes HQ is only 220mbit when recording at 30fps, I could imagine most people don't shot in that framerate :)

At 24fps you have around 176mbit, at 25fps it's 184mbit.

Hi there, I'm just concerned about the RAW on the pocket camera, by my calculations 128 GB in 30 mins works out to a transfer rate of around 70MB/s there is only 1 SD card that I can find on the market that does these kind of write speeds and that is the sandisk extreme pro. Now the highest these cards are available in is 64 GB so how can you have a 128GB card as you say to record RAW?
I hope I'm wrong!

Wow so the BM Production cam will have same space consideration for both prores and RAW...so its between workflow/image quality considerations now then.:) Kewl.

I don't think anyone can know that for sure until they release it

In actual use, I get 90 minutes of Prores 4k with 480GB SSDs on the BMPC4K. Will be curious to see how RAW compares.

You should get at least 60 minutes compressed raw then.
