Blackmagic Recording Media

I think blackmagic should create their own memory cards and hard drives. The price of cfast 2.0 cards are still outrageous, blackmagic should shake up that market and make memory cards that are more affordable, and work perfectly with their cameras. Does this seem likely to you guys? Or just wishful thinking?

Brian, there are quite a variety of competing manufacturers of cards (the silicon) and probably a greater number of vendors (the brand), but there are very few alternatives when it comes to the internal data managers (the firmware). When people offer a bespoke card, they tend to cost more albeit they’re arguably more reliable.

I just have my doubts BMD would be able to lower the CFast Card costs compared to the market trends given they don’t have a foundry.

I suspect there may be a similar logic at play with regard to bespoke prime lenses. At one time we hoped BMD would offer lenses. They’ve left it to the market. There are lenses for every budget and a lot of competitors so it’s quite difficult to know where to aim your arrow. RED tried.

As Blackmagic won't be able to build a dedicated flash memory factory, all they could do is buy chips from a third party, buy a memory controller from a third party, do their own programming, packaging and sell those as Blackmagic branded. I guess those won't likely be cheaper than the currently available ones.

As Lexar left the memory card business, some former Lexar and Micron employees have founded their own brand ProGrade, which seems to be of the same quality as Lexar.

These costs are roughly half over the last two years.

Here’s some current CFast/SDXC technology and some new ProGrade CFexpress 2-lane technology that might find its way into a future BMD product:

Here’s a review of the recently announced Wise CFexpress cards. Note there is a typo in the operating temperatures. Matt states from 10 to 70 degrees C. It should specify -10 to 70 degrees C.
