BMPC4K Production Camera - Your Recommended Ciné lenses

PostFri Apr 19, 2013 8:14 pm

Would like to hear from you regarding the ciné lenses you would recommend using on the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K with EF mount and S35 sensor. The lens doesn't need to have an EF mount, but please only include lenses where you know there is an adapter available so it can mount on the EF mount of the first BMPC4K. Please include only lenses that are true cinema camera lenses or have been modified or repurposed to behave like a cinema lens as much as possible. Do not include lenses that are intended to be used for stills cameras.

Hopefully we may come up with a shorter list of cinema lens candidates for the new camera. Thanks for your input.

My thinking was that it would be an extremely long list of lenses and the list of lenses that couldn't be adapted might be shorter than the potential number of stills lenses that could work. Let's see how this one goes. With my experience being very limited (to my 16mm film Bolex from the forties), I am hoping this thread helps me and others become aware lenses that are most suitable for the production cinema camera. Having read the wisdom of others in a post elsewhere and a blog about what makes a true cinema lens, it is quite an impressive achievement considering many factors that are uniquely important to cinema uses and not required on a stills lens. So it would be interesting to collect those lenses for the benefit of this great community.

But I think even stills lenses that have been repurposed for cinema uses deserve mention too and may be much more affordable to purchase since many cinema lenses will fall into the category of rental lenses for most of us due to their cost.

Yes, let's exclude the bulk of the PL mount lenses since you already have that covered:

But might be useful to include those fewer PL lenses that can be adapted to the EF mount if anyone wants to draw attention to that.

Thanks!

My choice would probably be the Carl Zeiss CP.2 and CZ.2

Then you could also look at the Angenieux Optimo zooms. Love these.
The following have mounts that can be converted to Canon EF or Nikon F mount (similar to the CP.2):
Optimo 15-40mm T2.6
Optimo 28-76mm T2.6
Optimo 45-120mm T2.8
Optimo 24-290mm T2.8

Thanks for those suggestions, Adam. AbelCiné has a great list of the quality 35mm zooms which includes these lenses. I wish they provided the information regarding adaptability to an EF mount.
