Blackmagic Cinema Camera 4k

PostMon Apr 30, 2018 8:34 pm

Hello I have been looking at the specs and the announcements and I am confused by one thing...

why is there only a limited amount of Prores options? no 444, no Xq ....why?

Did I miss something?

444 XQ will need more bandwidth than compressed RAW.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

I think the bandwidth isn't the problem, the real-time compression to Prores 444 probably is the problem. They probably cannot get that kind of computing power into a body that size, either physically or because of heat problems.

Yes. Or it could be segmentation too. While Blackmagic is usually good about giving everyone top-tier features regardless of price, I can see this as an acceptable one not to include.

In which case i'd like them to add Prores RAW as I don't really want to work with the DNG RAW but I'd like to keep the colour info

Having Prores RAW, 444, or 444HQ on the BMP4K would be a much welcomed update.

Not having prores 4:4:4 is not a huge problem, even if it's because of market segmentation. If there's a scenario where you have to shoot 4:4:4 you can shoot raw lossless and then just convert to 4:4:4 in davinci resolve. It should be functionally the same thing (I believe) and won't take that much time. Otherwise 4:2:2 HQ is plenty for a 13-stop camera. If you're in a major production, that's kind of a bummer not being able to shoot 4:4:4 when RAW is not allowed, but as long as the BMPCC4K is used for what it is (a smaller, more agile camera and not an A-Cam) I don't see it as a huge problem unless there's heavy amounts of VFX.

Even then, you can key 4:2:2 footage surprisingly well if you know what you're doing.

It’s 4K DCI. It’s raw. The world is your oyster if you have the time in post.
