Hands on the BMPCC4K, after NAB

PostWed May 02, 2018 9:36 pm

Thanks to a Secret Santa at a meet with Blackmagicdesign I was put in contact with Tor Rolf Johansen, the Blackmagicdesign Cinematography Product Specialist in my area, for a camera demo of the BMPCC4K.

I was smitten from the moment I had it in my hands. The technology packed into this device is mind boggling. I knew that the polite thing to do was to return the camera to its guardian and for me to leave at the end of the visit but quite frankly I could not bring myself to put the camera down. If you thought that the BMPCC and Micro cameras where something special the 4K Pocket is that on steroids.

I was able to use my passive Metabones Nikon to MFT adapter (without speed booster) with my Sigma 18-35 mm lens and was pleasantly surprised at the wide shot I was able to get. Tor demo’d a MFT lens on the camera and then a Zeiss prime lens using the EF to MFT adapter.

Admittedly the BMPCC4k still needs to go through a trial by fire, but just from the point of view of the functions on this camera, at the price I would be happy to buy it to use as a paperweight or stress reliever gadget.

IMO anyone that functions in the Blackmagic ecosystem needs to consider having this camera in their kit.

Thank you to Tor for taking the time and to the Secret Santa for making the demo possible.

Hands on the BMPCC4K, post NAB

PostWed May 02, 2018 10:34 pm

Leon’s in love!

Thanks for your report from NAB 2018.

I already have my paperweight on order from SLR Magic, a PL-mFT adapter so I can use my SLR Magic APO primes on the Pocket4K. Good to know that the angle of view at 18mm seems good. I just don’t know when SLR Magic will announce their widest lens, but at least my 25mm will be an ideal ‘normal’ lens.

By the way that isn’t all SLR Magic is shipping to me any day now. Apologies for the tease, but if Leon’s in love, I’m feeling playful!

It is true.
I am in love and I don't care who knows.

I feel guilty about two timing my BMPCC and turning towards a younger model.
I shall start a harem.
It cannot be a midlife crisis I am way beyond midlife.
It cannot be a seven year itch.
Oh! Grant Petty what are you doing to me. You evil, evil man.

Ok, enough about me.

Rick, stop this teasing business, apart from your "paperweight" what other toys are you getting.

Leon, since you couldn't control yourself, did you manage to insert your memory device into the camera? Did you get any footage?

I am not sure if you are being saucy like a sailor  or serious. :ugeek:
I am going to assume that you, being a gentleman, are being serious.
The answer is no.
I did not think that BMD would want footage out in the wild yet. So it never crossed my mind to ask. I was concentrating more on how this camera would work with the gear I have now. All the other things that matter will fall in place in good time.
Hmmmm, still not sure if you are being saucy or not.

Leon, my interest is entirely platonic. I simply thought that since you had your way with the camera something might have come of it.

Moving on.

I had the chance to try the BMPCC4K with Sigma 18-35 lens on my modified Manfrotto travel tripod.

Travel tripod found on this post :- viewtopic.php?f=14&t=72832

The head could take the weight comfortably but the plate is not long enough to be able to get the optimum balance point for a zoom lens.
I have a solution for this that involves an Arca Swiss setup that I still need to test and I am waiting for a part to arrive.
Will post when it arrives towards end of May, way before September when the camera hits the market.

Well, I had sent my order to my vendor immediately after watching Grants presentation. :D
I knew after all BMD won't disappoint me - they have come a long way with giant steps.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

The part arrived sooner than expected.

My solution to balancing the camera with zoom lens on the Manfrotto befree Live tripod head can be found at the end of this post:
