1950's thriller- shooting on URSA Mini 4.6K

PostFri May 04, 2018 11:29 pm

Filming a revisionist 1950's thriller this July. Here is a scene select we filmed on the URSA 4.6K to promote the feature. Thanks for taking a look and for all the help we have received on this board throughout the years!

Kyle channeling that 50s vibe. Who shot this? My guess is either Alfred Hitchcock or John Huston influenced by Orson Welles.

I concur with all of the above. If and when you do this as a full feature, please give folk a heads-up. It will be worth seeing.

Kyle, Some very nice visuals there and the acting is of a very good standard. Audio quality is Excellent ( what was your sound kit list?)
The Directing style isn't to my taste but I can see it is of a good standard.
But who the hell am I to comment! lol.

Good luck with this Movie, I tip my hat in respect to anyone who has the Energy and puts in the Hard work to make a film project come to life.

It really is something! As good as the image quality is, people are commenting on the audio quality. It makes all the difference. Having said that, great acting, great color and lighting. Can't wait to see the film!

Thanks so much for watching-- and I'll pass along the kind words regarding the audio to the sound mixer. John Taylor (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0852636/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cr60_ ) captured some great-sounding dialogue on the day. Not sure what kind of equipment he used. We tried our best in post to give the sound design and mix a dirtier analog quality, but John's audio capture was essential.

It didn't have a very 50's feel to me. The aspect is too wide. The colors too vibrant. Contrast too high. Shot selection too hectic. Sound too good.

A bit more late 60's, early 70's maybe.

Ryan and Owen— thanks for watching! We used Zeiss Contax lenses and an early 4.6k mini. No filters other than ND and infrared.

Jim— I agree that we didn’t nail a 50s look. Definitely want to get a softer, more organic look when we shoot next month. Almost considering going back to the BMCC 2.5k as I think thst cam had better motion rendering and just a more filmic look. But it’s probably not worth all of its downsides. Thank you for watching and the feedback!

This looks amazing. Love the film grain effect for the most part. The only thing that took me out was the repeating scratch at the top center of frame. If you use this looping clip again for film grain, I would remove that prominent scratch. After a while my eye was drawn from the actors to the scratch every time it appeared.

Love the coloring and feel of the piece. Really well done.

Thank you, Juri! We filmed on some old Zeiss Contax primes with a Schneider classic soft filter.
