Slider suitable for ump

PostSun May 06, 2018 10:38 am

Hi guys, I’m thinking about getting a slider; does anyone have recommendations for one for the ump. Looking for something that’s nice and stable; the length I’m less bothered about (as I find I rarely use a long slide anyway).

I use an Ikan ES-120 with my UMP. works great... Found it on amazon and paid about $350 if I remember correctly. http://ikancorp.com/productdetail.php?id=1112

For relatively short and subtle moves, you should check out Edelkrone's Wing Pro:

The Wing is so small and light, I pack it for just about single every gig. I use it frequently with the Ursa Mini 4.6K and Ursa Mini Pro.

Thanks guys. How do you find the Wing? I've read mixed reviews about it due to the inability to brace both ends (making it less stable).

The Wing only moves 1.3 feet, and with the dampening on the current version balance problems shouldn't be an issue for the Ursa Mini. Great for when you just need a bit of motion. Since my camera rig is all built around NATO rails and Kessler Kwik plates, I rapidly strip my camera down to just the body, side handle and lens before using it with the Wing. Perhaps other folks are using it more built up and less balanced. I see a lot of people attach an unwieldy Atomos recorder to their Sony/Canon/Panasonic cameras and I'm sure that would cause an issue using the Wing, but there's no need for adding that kind of extraneous unbalanced weight to the Ursa Mini.

This looks like an extremely interesting product - I’d never heard of it before. There’s a Wing Pro on their site which they allege can take 21kg!

Would you mind posting a photo of your setup? Do you use cine lenses?

This is the unit I use:
https://varavon.com/collections/video-s ... 2411736131

It's rated for 44 pounds. Very happy with how it performs with a rigged up UM4.6k PL.

I bought a cheap 75mm bowl adaptor from eBay to mount a tripod head to it.

Cinevate is supposed to have a one time sale today for the Duzi 4 Slider. Their price for the 32” slider is identical to the B&H Photo price, $489, so no idea where this special sale is happening as the website doesn’t indicate a sale price.

I would find something with a fly wheel. When I got the Duzi 4, it was such an improvement for this reason.

Just as important is an elegant mounting solution. I use my slider much less than I'd like, because I can't move quickly back to the tripod (I use a Vinten).

I’m traveling through Japan at the moment. Will post a photo of Wing setup when I return to SF.
Works fine with primes. I haven’t tested it with long zooms because I’m only wide on the Wing. Cinema zooms are lovely but too heavy for doc work I do so I’ve had no reason to ever test them on it.
I’ve got a relatively heavy B4 mount zoom that I haven’t tested yet with the Wing. At some point I’ll load it up and let you know how that goes.
