A basic Guide to using Prime lens in film. Framing/Compositi

PostSat May 12, 2018 4:55 am

Hello to one and all

I am seeking a basic guide to prime lens usage, lens choices/framing/composition pros and cons of etc etc.
Now I accept this is a huge subject, but we all must begin somewhere.
Forgive if this topic has been covered elsewhere.

Thanks to all.

Not here, but have a look at Wolfcrow. That site is run by an Indian who has compiled and commented a few examples from the greatest masters, like Akira Kurosawa or Orson Welles. IMHO, looking at their work is the best way to learn about the aesthetic choice of lenses (among other things).
If you are looking for info on vintage lenses, there is vintagelensesforvideo or a few good threads over at reduser.net – most fit BM cameras too ;-)
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Check out Every Frame a Painting. Its not so much about lenses but is great for getting into the mind of the director.

Not exactly a primer on the subject, but more of a reference is "Grammar of the Film Language" by Daniel Arijon.

https://www.amazon.com/Grammar-Film-Language-Daniel-Arijon/dp/187950507X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526237551&sr=8-1&keywords=grammar+of+the+film+language

I bought this book 20 years ago and continue to go back to it. It contains a lot of diferent practical composition and movement suggestions for narrative films.
