BMPCC 4K recording modes for Windows user

PostTue May 29, 2018 10:59 pm

Hi! I'm new in the forum and with blackmagic products. I've been doing some research but I'm still in doubt: What are windows user recording options? since the compressed formats are for apple, 120 fps is also ProRes... am I stuck with CinemaDNG as a windows user?

Most Windows NLEs can easily work with ProRes. Resolve and Premiere Pro for example are able to directly read ProRes without having the Quicktime framework installed.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Quicktime Frameworks is dead on all platforms.
.mov container playback is not exclusive to Mac and this isn't even specific to ProRes.
Windows Media Players can handle H.264 .mov as well as Mac so "Quicktime" plays no roll in this at all.
All modern Professional NLEs support ProRes .mov regardless of Operating System.

In fact, Apple's own Final Cut Pro X can export "Master" ProRes files in .mxf rather than .mov.

It certainly might be interesting to see if there's a motive to move to ProRes .mxf over .mov since Apple supports that as export from its own NLE.

There is even a free solution to EXPORT prores on windows called FFMPEG. Be warned as it produces a 1-2% difference in the red channel of your image. If you A/B the images side-by-side you'll see it, otherwise it's not noticeable.

Also certain programs like Nuke, Baselight, Scratch, etc. can also natively export Prores and are licensed from Apple.

And if you do not want to dig into FFMPEG and command lines you can use this:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/vdfiltermod/

(it's ProRes support is based on FFMPEG)

VDubFilterMod can now export ProRes into MOV and it can also do Cineform.

Thanks for your reply guys. So, I shouldn't have any problems editing ProRes files in Premiere Pro on a Windows machine as long as I have Quicktime framework installed right? I can even watch the files with WMP. Ok, I'll try to find some ProRes files to see how my PC handle it though, you guys know any free samples online source?

Just one more thing. I' ve read that DNxHD codec is a better workflow solution for windows users. Why is that? Since as you guys said NLEs like premiere can handle ProRes

Based on responses above, you don't need Quicktime framework installed.

Windows users can't export or transcode ProRes without additional software ($$$).

FFMPEG is free but not sure how legal it is.

Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

FFMPEG is GPLed. And KDENLIVE I use to process BMPCC 2K PRORES is GPLed too. So I expect some patent process could be started against authors but not end users.

https://www.ffmpeg.org/legal.html

https://userbase.kde.org/Kdenlive/Manua ... nd_License

I don't know whether KDENLIVE works with PRORES 4k but proxies will surely be needed. AFAIK it does not use hardware acceleration with GPU.

About Windows: Just say NO. Migrate to anything else including OSX.

These are some of the reasons why BMD made Resolve edit friendly, so that you can start and end in
there. Round tripping is a thing of the past. Well, this is in consideration of the fact that you will end up
coloring your footage. There's no reason not to grade, working with footage from a BMD camera. So whiles in Resolve you enjoy the luxury of working with all formats that their cameras produce. And it's Windows compatible.

Art, not meaning to derail this thread, but with Resolve 15, it’s coming so close to a one-stop shopping centre. If there’s a couple of things someone still needs, just wait for a Resolve 16. Probably going for world domination by 2020.

Rick, since you are using Resolve and a Mac computer, I see no advantage for you to use DNx, which is more of Avid support codec.
