UM46K shuts off during shoots

PostMon Jun 18, 2018 10:41 pm

I'm having an issue where I'll be in the field (I mostly shoot handheld, doc-style), and keep having a really terrible issue of my camera shutting off in the middle of shooting. It seems to be related to the battery/v-lock plate. It happens regardless of battery make.

It's not 100% reproduceable. That is to say, I cannot say precisely why this is happening. But it seems to come when I bump, even extremely slightly, the batter from the lower left side. Basically, if the camera is mounted on my shoulder and I'm running or walking fast, and the camera battery taps my head or shoulder the wrong way, the camera shuts off completely.

I can restart no problem, but as you can imagine this creates for an unacceptable situation at times. Any ideas as to why this may be happening I would welcome.

I will say, the vlock plate does seem to be secured well, and there's no jiggle in the battery when I mounted it on the v-lock. It's also not a case of me accidentally pressing the v-lock release button. Here's a video to illustrate. Oh, and this happens regardless of the level of battery charge.

If you have the original BMD battery plate - it has a little design weakness: If you press at your battery from below it can be pushed out of the plate - without unlocking it manually. How tight a battery sits depends on the manufacturer and their tolerances, but I guess with enough force every battery can be pushed out. Only solutions is another battery plate, for example from IDX.

Check all screws for tightness and also check the little spring behind the locking mechanism - maybe it is too weak?

No, I'm using the BMD plate, but have read the IDX doesn't have this problem.

I think you could try to replace the spring on the BMD plate with one with more tension.

Hey Robert, thanks for the info. I honestly didn't know there was another battery plate to buy, figuring I had to go with BM's. I'm going to look into getting one. Will get back to y'all when I do.

Yes, the Wooden Camera version incorporates a BDS also good with a battery mount!

So I finally got my IDX V-Mount plate in. I dunno, maybe I need to call Adorama in NYC where I bought it, but it has a completely different plug head than the URSA minis. As it stands, it's not compatible. Which is weird, cuz it's advertised as such. (you might have to scroll down on the image to see).

The item label in your posted picture says it all: you got the P-V2 plate, not the P-V2UR.

Wrong: https://www.adorama.com/idxpv2.html

Correct: https://www.adorama.com/idxetpv2ur.html

I'm having the same issues sometimes !

Than I saw this post:

Robert Niessner wrote:If you have the original BMD battery plate - it has a little design weakness: If you press at your battery from below it can be pushed out of the plate - without unlocking it manually.

And this is exactly what I was doing, pusing it on my body to be more stable.
Good to know I'm not the only one.

Didn't mean to abandon this thread. Moved to LA and so attention was elsewhere. Thanks for that correction, Robert. I had specifically ordered the URSA one. Didn't realize there as an alternative. Maybe the good folks at Adorama made a mistake. Unfortunately my office is no longer across the street from them!

But will re-order and re-post to put some closure on this thread.

Got a IDX lately and i gotta say its great! Batteries snap in nicely and there is no more random shutoff when doing heavy handheld stuff. I can really recomend the idx! this is the one i got:

Thank you Robert for putting me on to that, solved a problem!

I have a new in the box BM V Mount p,plate, that does work, no accidental disconnects with the IDX battery I tested it with, if any one is interested. PM me for more info. I ended up going with the AB Gold Mount.
Cheers

Don't know if I want to spend $200 for another plate, though :(
