BMPC4K ProRes HQ ... is it 4k?

PostSun Jun 24, 2018 8:45 pm

I'm a bit confused about the ProRes 422 HQ 3996x2160 codec on the BMPC4k camera ... is it 4k? We have a situation where we might have to shoot ProRes 422 HQ footage, most of the project has already been shot with 4k r3d files from a Red camera, is this feasible?

There is a lot of confusion about 4K or UHD, they are slightly different. But you could always crop the Red footage if it doesn't fit that might vibe better than minimal scaling, which can soften the image.

ProRes HQ is just a codec and can hold either size.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Lisa, the camera shoots 4000x2160, but slightly cropping to 3996x2160 gives you an appealing 1.85:1 aspect ratio that has been used on films like North by Northwest. The aspect ratio, not the resolution of course as that was a film made long before the digital revolution. It’s not really 4K. UHD is 3840x2160 in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Most ‘4K’ televisions of course are really UHD. Shame on the industry being so sloppy and misleading.

I’d don’t know the resolution of the other footage on the RED camera as RED uses so many non-standard resolutions. Very few of which are real DCI 4K 4096x2160.

If you’re trying to match them, it will no doubt need to be done in post to the desired resolution of the deliverables.

If you are going for Cine projected distribution, it gets down res to 2K anyway, so the average viewer is not going to see the difference. I mic UHD and HD for HD deliverable video, once edited and down res to HD, you can not see the difference on a UHD or HD TV. You and I may see a slight difference, but we are looking for one anyway. :(
