HDMI Frame Rates

PostMon Jun 25, 2018 5:37 pm

Recording 60fps ProRes on my Video Assist, is the Video Assist simply sampling the camera sensor 60 times each second and recording those samples? I can have my camera set to 30fps but the Video Assist will still record at 60fps via the HDMI output. Is it the case that the shutter speed set in the camera should be done relative to the frame rate being recorded in the Video Assist?

When recording 1080p60, yiu get 60 frames per second from the camera to the VA. The VA on,y records the frame rate (and resolution) set in the camera, it can not take a 1080p30 signal from a camera and record it as 1080p60.

That said, depending on the camera you are using, many older video cams and signal when the camera is set to 1080p30, but will output instead a 1080i60 (interlaced 1/2 frames) instead. The VA will show the signal as 1080i60, and record it as is. Cameras did this 3:2-pulldown to get a signal that could be placed in an interlaced wrapper and appear as an interlace signal to external monitors (which used to only display 1080i, due to bandwidth issues. Some csmeras are still restricted today, as a marketing ploy, to get you to buy a more expensive camera to get true 1080p60 output.
