Continuous filming on SSD and CFast with BMPCC4k?

PostTue Jul 10, 2018 11:10 am

What happens when the SSD used to record 4k Raw on the BMPCC4k gets full? Does it go on to record to the CFast card seamlessly?

Probably not, even though the camera isn't out yet. As best as I have read, the recording "pipeline" in the camera can only go to one media at a time - that's also why the Pocket 4k cannot (as best as the released information for now) record raw to CFast/SSD while recording proxy files to SD card simultaneously.

It might be something that BMD can implement (and it would be nice if they would incorporate proxy recording), but right now it does not seem like it would happen. You'd have to switch the output source in the menu when the SSD fills up.

Do you know of any device such as an external monitor/recorder that can record 4k raw and features two SSD slots?

Also, do you reckon the Atomos Shogun might be compatible with BMPCC4k?

Best,

BMD has said on this forum that the HDMI out is only 1080p, but the Atomos Ninja does record from HDMI (I have that recorder). I think the Odyssey Q7 has 2 SSDs, but it is SDI, not HDMI.

Why do you need such long record times for raw, anyway?

And I'd bet the HDMI doesn't export raw - no cameras (currently) send raw via HDMI, but I'm sure Atomos wants them to (and I think it wouldn't be too difficult to implement, even on old cameras). I'm waiting for Magic Lantern to enable raw via HDMI on Canon DSLRs (it'd give new life to my 60d, no doubt).

Oh yeah, that'd be a definite win!

Do you reckon there would be some sort of an extension of the BMPCC4k that would allow for SDI output?
Well, it's for high-budget theatre work. Would definitely help if there are no gaps in the footage of each camera and it must go on for bout 2 hours. It's not too much of a deal to switch to the CFast while raiding the SSD but would save some hassle.

Also it's worth mentioning that the USB-C port is available for charging the BMPCC4k! So an external recorder would be incredibly useful to keep that USB-C port free. 4k RAW SDI output ftw! :o

BMD makes an HDMI to SDI converter, but I don't know if it can convert raw signals (although I don't see why not).

If you're in a theater, you could plug in the camera to the wall for continuous power. Then just use a large-capacity SSD (although I don't know how large for uncompresses raw for two hours). Heck, if you're in a space with power available, use a large USB-C raid - Grant mentioned that option in the original presentation at NAB.

Why do you want to shoot in uncompressed raw?

Interesting idea to use a converter. Need to check if it converts 4k RAW.

I'm just searching for options at this point :D Will probably go for Prores in the end :D
