DUMB QUESTION - URSA MINI PRO.

There is a friend and colleague who has been asked to shoot a project on the ARRI Alexa Studio. There will be some shots which require slow-motion. The Alexa Studio is apparently limited to 60FPS.

The Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro can do faster but in real-world terms, what is the highest frame rate that can be shot and yet be gradable to match with the Alexa footage?

Any wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

The pro is also limited to 60fps; anything higher uses a tiny portion of the sensor in windowed mode.

As Jacob said, 120fps is in windowed mode. So use the right lenses. I don't often use 120fps, but it's nice

You'll need more light to match the exposures with the Alexa due to the higher frame rate, but other than that, you'll be recording in raw so matching footage shouldn't be tough.

Just be sure to match the lighting and exposure as closely as you can. Lighting especially, make sure that if you use a tungsten key when shooting with the Alexa that you also use a tungsten key at the same angle and with the same modifiers when you shoot with the UM 4.6K.

When shooting the Ursa Mini Pro in windowed mode, your biggest enemy relative to full sensor Alexa footage will be noise. Tunsten balance is noisier than daylight balance by default (this is true of all digital sensors), so you may want to make sure you're shooting in sunlight, or under HMI or daylight balanced LED lights. And you may also want to shoot the Ursa Mini Pro a stop over and pull it back a stop in post, just to doubly ensure that noise is at a minimum.
And, to help your colorist get an exact match, shoot a DSC Labs One Shot or Chroma DuMonde with both cameras.

You can shoot higher frames in the Alexa studio, but you need to turn off the mirror. (Its done in the menu) Once you turn off the mirror it’s like a normal Alexa.

Does the project need higher than 60fps Global shutter ?

Thank you for that information John. I will pass it on. I think from his description that the story requires a slow-motion of action in a conflict, so I am guessing around 150 FPS. He is not familiar with the Alexa Studio.

Alexa Studio / Alexa top rate is 120fps.

Only an Alexa Mini (at certain resolutions) will give you that.

Sounds like you’re looking at something more specialised.

You'll either need to rent a high speed camera or try in post. If you shoot so high, let's say 90 fps, that you'll only need to fake every other frame by optical flow it can work. Quality depends a lot on image content. Try to avoid motion crossing over in different directions and keep the background soft.
But this approach needs careful testing, it can bite if you don't.

But then, a high speed camera will need testing too, to find out if you can grade to match.

I hope this special shot really does need such a high frame rate. Otherwise it sounds like a very boring shot. In my mind 120 fps is slow enough for any human activity.
