Rawlite OLPF for Ursa Mini 4.6

PostWed Aug 15, 2018 4:39 pm

Mosaic engineering seems to be dead by now.
Rawlite, which was mentioned a few times on this forum, has a new OLPF option for both UM4.6 and UM4.6 Pro.
Any experiences or usage examples, anyone?

just read the bmcc user page for this. I bought it... the shims seem to be a guess from rawlite... they said the same shims could be added to the ef as the pl and they are totally different. also I just read that john brawley said the rainbow filter still needs to be added? which rawlite said nothing about. also that doesn't really make sense as thats the same thing? but rawlites it total IR cut and rainbow add filter is an Ir diminisher ? a bit freaking confused and have a dam shoot monday.......

Try to ask John, he was very responsive when I asked about details over at bmcuser.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

The rainbow flare mask is an opaque piece that completely prevents light from passing through where it covers the sensor. It is totally different from a transparent IR filter that passes light through to the sensor. Rawlite would have no reason to mention it because it is completely separate element. One does not necessarily effect the other.

I just shot a Before/After skintone test with the Rawlite OLPF. Check it out here:

Aaron, thanks for the test. Would be interesting to see a scene that exhibits a lot of moiré and how the filter helps that. In a scene that isn’t problematic such as you’ve shown us, the filter doesn’t seem to alter the image much at all. The before and after have different Colour though but not sure if that relates to the filter or the actual light changing subtlety.

Is the pattern on the dress suffering from a lot of moiré or are the threads actually multi-colored? It did look less colourful with the filter.

Frank, Rawlite has a moire test on their site so I was mainly interested in the skintone improvement with the IR cut. I wish I would've done a moire test as well though. So far it seems to not lose any sharpness whatsoever.
John Brawley suggests that the OLPF reacts much better to tungsten lighting with skin than with no filter.

Here is the moire test from Rawlite:
