Canon EF 16-35 ii or Canon EF-S 17-55?

PostSat May 04, 2013 2:53 pm

I have a budget for getting either if the lens. Which would be the best in terms or sharpness, image clarity and optic results for black magic ef 2.5?

Also have to consider that i have a 5dmk3.

My lens now is sigma 8-16, canon 14mm, 50mm 1.4, canon 24-105, and canon 70-200 2.8 ii IS.

So i have to decide which is better and basically it would be for event videography.

if you get the 16-35 that should work on both cameras right? I have the 17-55 and it's nice and sharp.. but it's not designed for the FF sensor of your 5D

The 17-55 would probably be a better choice for the BMCC as it has IS. The 16-35 does not.

If sharpness/optical resolution is your goal then the 16-35 isn't a bad choice... I searched through all the standard EF/S lenses on DP review and the 16-35mm according to their tests is incredibly sharp ( off the chart sharp). The test patterns on their site for the 16-35 at 100% look like cg renders rather than actual images.

I can't comment on how sharp the 16-35 is on the BMC... But I will know by the end of Monday :P .

Back in the real world an IS lens would probably be better for events though...

Owning the 16-35 ii myself and having shot on the BMCC EF mount with it I will say get it hands down. As a photography shooter and cinematographer that lens is absolutely gorgeous and the resolution is spectacular. I would put it up against a distagon any day. The only complaints are at 16mm there is a little softness around the edge but it's very minor and considering you're on an EF mount blackmagic with the crop factor that won't be an issue. This lens is beautiful, one of Canon's best. Get it.

DPReview's test chart results for the 16-35mm f/2.8. Check out the sharpness/optical resolution chart at 24mm f/5.6. I haven't seen any of the other standard lenses that are that good.

I have the 16-35L II and I love it. Having said that....the BMCC resolves a lot of resolution and using a lens as sharp as the 16-35 can make your life a little harder when it comes to moire. I shot a test interview with it and the pattern on the talents coat created a strong moire pattern. I have to go up to 2.8 to soften the image enough to eliminate the pattern. It was crazy. I couldn't even see the pattern with the naked eye at 6 feet away.

It is an amazing lens...but really consider WHAT you are shooting when choosing lenses. The IS and extra reach of the 17-55 might be more of a benefit that the super sharpness of the 16-35.

Nice advice and info sean. Yeap i am gearing towards IS an i think i would be considering it more as we will be using blackmagic as our A cam for our event videography and taking into consideration also the capability ti venture to film with BMCC's. we are placing already our order for 2 4k bmcc.

Thanks again
