Gimbal Advice

PostSun Aug 19, 2018 8:11 am

I've read the Gimbal threads I could find here, but still have questions. There are so many different gimbals and so much differing advice.
I'm a longtime pocket camera user and have a pocket 4k on pre-order.
I make music videos for my own projects and up to now my biggest compromise has been lack of movement.
I would like to buy a gimbal for my next shoot (September), it's doubtful I will have the 4k by then, and I won't be proficient with it either, and I can't afford to buy a gimbal for the pocket that can't be then used for the new 4k pocket.
I would like to use a small, portable gimbal. I don't need follow focus, I don't need to mount monitors, or microphones. I can use lightweight lenses like Leica M, Kodak C mount and Voigtlander.
I WOULD like a gimbal that has iOS compatibility for tracking shots etc.
Is a Moza or Crane (2 or V2) going to OK with the Pocket 4k?
It feels like the Ronin-S would be too big and overkill for my needs.
Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

Well yes, I agree.
Probably my most used lens is an Alpa Kern Switar 50mm. The macro and low light performance are both superb.
I'm generally making social media videos with music gear, which look more interesting in extreme close-up.
Outdoors, I use an SLR Magic 12mm and the Sigma 18-35, with all the IR cut and ND filters I need. But as I'm shooting for myself I can limit the gimbal to smaller, lighter lenses like my M mounts and Voigtlanders.

Thanks, I don't need a cage.
They link to the Ronin-S, and I was asking if there were any alternatives with fewer 'bells and whistles'.

Thanks again. I appreciate the help but I had a specific question.
I know most of the available gimbals. I need one that can mount the original pocket camera and likely work with the pocket 4k. I can buy a gimbal now that will work with my pocket (for my upcoming shoot), but other than very large, quite expensive gimbals like the Ronin-S (not even available yet where I am), I don't see any gimbals suggested for the new pocket 4k.

Back when BMPCC4K was announced at NAB it was tested with the Gudsen Moza Air and worked.

Craig, did you use the Moza Wireless Thumb Controller to control the gimbal and the BMPC4K? Were you able to leave the Thumb Controller connected to the Moza Air and the BMPCC4K at the same time? In the video, you didn't connect the gimbal to the camera with any of the Gudsen supplied Moza Control Cables.
I'd appreciate you feedback on this please. Thanks
