There are very learned folks who have said it makes no sense to use Colour Gen 4 until the Camera you’re using has included Colour Gen 4. They’ve also said at this point it is intended to be applied anti raw footage.

Then there’s the school of thought that tries things to see what happens. You and I are in that school. I used it in post with ProRes 444 XQ and found a combination of settings that did appear to be helpful including defining a Colour Transform ResolveFX for each clip.

It may not be Kosher, but it tastes good. If it doesn’t, and you aren’t happy sampling other appetizers, it doesn’t really hurt given Resolve is non-destructive.

Long live, ACES; long live Colour Gen 4.

Though it's not RECOMMENDED for non-raw footage, it's not going to do you any harm to try it; and if it looks good, then why worry? It's not like it will damage your footage or anything like that.

Odds are however, it will deliver a nicer look when you apply it to raw footage, and probably give you better results straight out of the camera when you use it on cameras that have been updated with color science v4 also.

There's absolutely no reason that you should NOT try it, just don't get your expectations up; just understand that sometimes the results might be wonky.

For Resolve users how is there any meaningful difference if the transform is applied in camera or in computer? If your color spaces are handled correctly the difference should be indiscernible. Waiting for a camera firmware update is pointless. The only users I can see this having any affect on are the people who shoot straight to rec709. For all practical intents and purposes Gen 4 is here.

Seems we are always left to deduce what’s happening. BMD could write up a white paper I suppose (and I haven’t checked to see if it’s discussed in the Resolve 15 manual). I’ll be shooting raw in September, but by that time BMD may have the firmware update for the URSA Mini cameras. I’ll try to do a raw test before and after the firmware is updated just because we are curious.

I'm not comfortable posting quotes between forums but CHook posted a really encouraging comment regarding Gen4, extended video mode and preview/starting grade LUT over on the other forum.

If you're recording raw, most likely the difference will be nil. The in camera preview after the update might look nicer though. ProRes, where the color science is baked in at capture time, will probably look nicer after the in camera update.

Not to be obtuse John but will the new P4k utilize Gen 4 shooting in ProRes or is it only for raw transform in Resolve?

I imagine Gen4 will ship with the p4k and you can shoot ProRes Gen4. Same for Ursa Minis once they update the firmware.

I like the look of the Extended Video LUT applied to 4.6K RAW. For super fast turnaround stuff I would probably be comfortable shooting that in camera.

Yes, the Ursa Broadcast has Gen 4, and you can shoot ProRes or Extended Video Gen 4 with it. I assume the PC4K will be the same.

I believe Grant said this would happen at NAB. It’s a matter of rolling it out through firmware. I’ve been testing with it in the last few months and it looks great.

He might not be referring to the PC4K footage, but rather to using beta FW with Ver 4 on his UM Pro Cameras.

Frank, the OLPF goes over the sensor. The rainbow filter is like a mask to prevent light bouncing around related to the internal ND filter wheel. It’s still needed.

I don’t recall a sticker fix. The solve was a metal circular mask that screwed into the throat of the mount that is still required with the RawLite OLPF. I’ve not heard of a sticker before ?

The fix I got for the rainbow flare was a sticker. I just got another one from BlackMagic to put on my Rawlite OPLF when they are back in stock.

The mask that BMD support sent me was not metal. Some form of vinyl or plastic with a backing to be removed, like a sticker. The one they sent you is metal and it screwed in?

I think the difference is the camera mount, the PL uses a metal cone shield, while the EF version is the one you got, more like a sticker. My Broadcast camera PL mount (Same as a Ursa Mini Pro) came with a metal cone, that screwed in.

Hmmm, this is an Ursa Mini Pro. The flare mask is separate from the mount, but it's a sticker, not metal. Perhaps the metal mask is only on the broadcast? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
