Hi all,

Will my speedbooster from the BMPCC work on the new BMPCC4K?

Thanks

No, the sensors are different size, the BMPCC Speed Booster was optimized for the smaller sensor and sensor stack in the Pocket and Micro Cameras. You need a MFT Speed Booster like the Metabones XL or Ultra.

Hi there,

Would the Metabones Nikon G to Micro 4/3 Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x Speedbooster work on the new BMPCC 4K?

Thanks

If the taking lens is ‘full frame’ then it should be fine. Looking at crop: 1.9 x 0.71 = 1.35x. So only ‘full frame’ (135 film) and possibly APS-H lenses will work well.

Unfortunately you get this aberration/distortion and a good amount of vignette at the edges regardless of the lenses. The very corners actually become completely black. You could crop at about 3K to avoid it. Of course it's recommended you get a new speedbooster. The 0.71x or 0.64x (for full frame lenses).
The attached photo is from the Pocket4K + 0.58x speedbooster + Contax Zeiss FF lens.

Man your contribution is awesome! Have you tried any superfast (1.2 or 1.4) lenses to see how they perform on the speedboosters?

Thanks!!!

Was the 0.58x BMPCC SB sharp in the central region at least?

It would help expanding the central 2K crop area for 120fps... ;-)

Yes, it will work with the HD crop window, as this is smaller than the S16 sensor in the original Pocket camera. I plan to use mine this way with my Zeiss ZF lenses. I am considering getting the 0.71 Ultra SB to use with full gate.
Cheers

Will the Viltrox EF-M2 0.71x work for the BMPCC 4k?

Has anyone worked out which Metabones Speed Booster for Canon EF lens will provide the correct coverage of the M43 size sensor in the BMPCC4K? I have found it quite difficult trying to decipher all of the data on the Metabones web site. They also say on some of the adapters that they have been optimized for the thinner stack height of the sensor used in the BMD cameras, rather than the standard M43 sensor used in Panasonic and Olympus bodies.
Any help would be welcome. Cannot find anything definitive on the web.
Best regards

Caleb at the "DSLR Video Shooter" YouTube channel mentioned that he used the metabones 0.64x Speedbooster on the BMPCC4k with the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 with very slight "acceptable vignetting on the wide end.
Can anyone confirm that? Maybe provide sample footage?

So both the Ultra .71 and XL .64 say “for full-frame lenses” in the description, which kind of adds to the confusion. So the .64 would be better for full frame glass, but the .71 for a mix of full frame and aps-c?

I’m wondering since these adapters are $650 and can control focus and aperture digitially... What if you have a dumb lens, like a manual prime set? Are there dumb adapters without all the electronics that would work better?

I use the BMPCC 4K with a Metabones SpeedBooster XL and Canon full frame lenses. My focal length of preference is 16mm. Zero vignetting is visible. Let me know if you need any test images or clips.

And what about the Viltrox EF-M2?
Tests sugests its even better than the Metabones when stopped down. Anyone has experience with this? Its a fraction of the cost of a Metabones

Thanks for the feedback mate :)
Could you possibly own a Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 and try it out with the SB XL on 18mm focal length and provide us with sample frames? much appreciated :)

How about autofocus? Does it work?

Great question. It does not. The image stabilization option in the menu is also shaded out. Otherwise, iris control works fine. I hope the above shortcomings are addressed in upcoming camera or adapter firmware updates.

I heard somewhere that metabones might eventually have a specific Speedbooster for Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. This has not been confirmed but if true might be worth waiting for. Hopefully we will hear something soon.

Omar, the Sigma 18-35mm barely covers Super 35. With the SpeedBooster XL on the BMPCC4K it won’t just vignette at 18mm, you may get a porthole. Honest. With the Ultra you will vignette at 18mm.

This has, surprisingly, not been my experience with the Viltrox (0.71x) and the GH5S (which has a similarly oversized M43 sensor, unless I'm mistaken?); corners are pretty much fine at 18mm.

Hi Rick,

Is that confirmed?

I was thinking of grabbing the Ultra to use with the Sigma 18-35mm but would be good to know for sure if it seriously vignettes before dropping a heap of cash on this combo.

Also, any early users notice any problems with the standard M43 to EF Speedboosters on the P4K, my understanding is that the other Blackmagic specific speed boosters only came about due to the earlier cameras having a non standard filter stack in front of the sensor - does the P4K have similar issues?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Mark

I haven't noticed any vignetting with the Ultra and the Sigma 18-35mm, even at 18mm. I haven't tested on a flatly-lit surface, which might reveal slight vignetting. I'll try to do that tonight.

I have the EF mount, and iris control works fine, but focus doesn't. I updated it to the latest firmware.

Yes, it will vignette. The 18-35 is for APSC sensors, the Speedbooster Ultra is made to be used with full frame lenses.

Mark, sorry I cannot confirm by first hand evidence as I don’t have any SpeedBooster or the BMPCC4K. But here’s my rationale.

I use the various horizontal crop factors as it’s an easy way to compare coverages since actual image circles of lenses designed for stills cameras are usually not posted by manufacturers.

The horizontal crop factors of the BMPCC4K:
DCI 4K 1.9x
UHD 2.025x
HD 4.05x

The horizontal crop factors of the Canon APS-C:
1.6x

The horizontal crop factors of the URSA Mini 4.6K:
1.42x

Metabones SpeedBoosters focal reducer factors:
Ultra 0.71x
XL 0.64x

The Sigma 18-35mm Zoom for stills camera is described as APS-C only because that makes sense for photographers who use either 135 film full frame sensors or APS-C cameras or smaller sensors. It’s well known this zoom covers a normal Super 35 cinema camera sensor. The BMD URSA Nini 4.6K sensor is slightly larger than normal Super 35. We have many people who use the 18-35mm with the Mini 4.6K successfully. At 18mm there may be a slight vignette but others say it’s fine. So let’s agree the 18-35mm covers Super 35. But it doesn’t cover any larger area.

Ultra with the BMPCC4K:
0.71x1.9x = 1.349x Super 35 lens will vignette shooting DCI 4K; full frame lens required.

0.71x2.025x = 1.438 Super 35 lens may slightly vignette shooting in an UHD window.

0.71x4.05x = 2.88x APS-C and Super 35 lens will not vignette shooting in an HD window; full frame lens optional.

XL with the BMPCC4K:
0.64x1.9x = 1.216x Super 35 lens will vignette shooting DCI 4K; full frame lens required.

0.64x2.025x = 1.296x Super 35 lens will vignette shooting UHD windowed; full frame lens required.

0.64x4.05x = 2.592x APS-C and Super 35 lens will not vignette shooting HD windowed; full frame lens optional.

Rick,
I’m sorry I don’t. It’s a full frame lens on a SpeedBooster XL (for full frame). Will probably not answer the questions users have regarding the Sigma 18-45.
