Experience with Leica & Nikon on BMCC (EF) ?

PostMon May 06, 2013 6:45 am

Seeing as the MFT Cinema Camera may never come out, I want to explore the options of using the EF mount BMCC with Leica/Nikon glass.

I know Phillip Bloom has given his opinion on the matter, with DOP issues etc.
but are there any BMCC owners who have used these lenses via adapters?

I use Nikon (AI & AIS) lenses on my BMCC. I also use cine modded Carl Zeiss ZF.2 lenses and a Nikon mount Tokina 11-16mm.

On the Tokina I have a Novoflex adaptor that includes an aperture control tab. Expensive but you get what you pay for. On the other lenses I have cheap Chinese eBay adaptors. Tho I plan to swap them for the Redrock Micro adaptors as they are much more stable.

You can also get replacement mounts that are more stable than using an adaptor.

With Nikon glass you'll be limited on the wide end but the Tokina fills that gap nicely.

The Zeiss are very sharp and in many cases to sharp, especially on skin. Worth investing in a ProMist filter to soften the image in those cases.

John Brawley did some shots earlier, can't remember where with the Leica Summicron R 35 and 50. Two of my favorite lenses. They looked BEAUTIFUL. Has that warm Pana Primo vibe to them.

I think Duclos modded Leica R primes are some of the best lenses out there for transitioning to video. They have wonderfully long focus throws as well.

I use old Nikkors on several cameras, including on a BMCC. Work great.
