We have just announced our new format at IBC... Blackmagic RAW.

The game just changed.

Holy sh*t! Will this work on the Pocket? I guess the camera needs a lot of extra 'oomph' for the de-mosaicing, right?

*EDIT: Never mind, Grant mentions in the video it will be rolled out to the Pocket eventually.

Also might i just add how cool it is to see the CEO of a company give a thirty-minute walkthrough of this new feature (using blocks as props, haha!)!

Is/will it also be possible to install the firmware on the Mini 4.6k?

This looks fantastic. I certainly hope it will be on the Ursa Mini 4.6k though!

Definitely looking forward to using this on the Pocket 4k too :)

YES!!! OMG!!! YES!!!

Please, get this available to the URSA Mini 4.6K as well soon. I want to play and give feedback on it so much. I have a short film I'm planning... two actually. So I would love to use Blackmagic RAW for these. Got a shoot today, so wouldn't have installed the beta now since we shot yesterday. But I would totally have done it tomorrow so I could start playing next week.

Congratulations Blackmagic Camera Development Team! You read my mind. This is exactly what I was wanting for improving upon CinemaDNG!

Guess we know know why they didn't say too much about ProRes RAW support after NAB :-).

Just wondering what the support will be for NLEs - are there plug-ins in the pipeline for FCP X & Adobe products?

Look forward to trying it out soon.

Exciting news! Noticed in the film Mini Pro footage at 1500 - does BRAW dramatically improve low light performance - it's looking that way to me?

higher fps need faster reading from sensor, not a problem of recording on bmd cameras.this a reason that you can do with windowed recording like in Red sensors.

This is huge, but if they make this available on the Pro, I don't see why not to the 4.6K at the same time. Is the hardware that different?

Still digesting this announcement. Was going to invest in some CFast 2.0 cards and potentially better editing hardware in anticipation of BMPCC4K but this changes everything.

I hope Apple don't acquire BMD.

Original BM4K would be amazing, although I very much doubt it. Decided a few days ago I'm going to look into using the one I have access to for some theater work, since the global shutter will make my life A LOT easier (damn stage lighting...). This would turn it from a "maybe..." to a "hell yeah!". I might even start hunting for some used ones on eBay if that happens...

I'd be very disappointed if Mini 4K didn't get it, though, since that's my main camera for the moment (partly due to the shutter, again).

I could be wrong, but didn't he say previously that the new colour science 4 will be available in the Ursa Mini 4.6 as well. It seems to me that it is somehow connected with BRAW... It would be a shame if the UM4.6 is left behind. I thought also it shared the same processor like UMP.. :?

at end of video Grant tell that braw, new cs and more will be available for other mini and pocket4k later.
about previous cameras I'm a bit skeptical be cause their processor could be too weak.

Thank you, thank you, thank you BM!
Another side benefit is now we won't need a beast of a computer to efficiently edit and grade with.
And BRAW breathes longer life into our existing workstations/laptops.
Wonderful!

That's probably going to be the determining factor in what cameras get BRaw support and which ones don't... if they have enough computing power on board, they'll probably get it sooner or later.

It's probably coming soon for the UM 4.6K and the Pocket 4K. BMD's going to want it in the field as soon as possible, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was already in closed alpha testing.

Besides, how else would they test the SDK? :)

This is AWESOME! I have an FS7/Atomos Shogun at my work, and I did some Prores Raw (non-scientific) tests when it was released, and compared to CDNG...the CDNG held up better.

I'm looking forward to getting my P4k and testing the Braw in similar tests - I'm trying not to set my expectations too high, but.... :D

Great Job, BMD and Grant! Keep up the good work!

Now I gotta save for that UMP... :)

think to a video Assist4k that could record a open raw format, that could be add and read from every software, that you can do color with sidecar files, instead to produce x files.
think to export in braw when you edit, and you only need to copy sequence from original to another files (old but way to speedup editing possibile with some codecs from since 20 years.
go BMD go

Re: Blackmagic RAW

Hi,

Could someone clarify for me on the file arrangement please? I believe that, as opposed to *.R3D with an individual file limit (up to 4GB) and with multiple sequenced files per shoot, with Blackmagic RAW recording a single *braw file is produced with no inherent file-size limit (excepting media capacity). Is this correct?

Thanks,

Ian

So far it looks great. Shot a clip at 1600 ISO to see if there's a difference in the FPN on the UMP, and it's definitely improved. Only minor downside I've seen thus far is that when shooting .BRAW, any resolution aside from 4.6K is automatically windowed, with no option disable sensor windowing.
