Who are your trusted reviewers?

PostThu Oct 11, 2018 4:16 pm

Been trawling around looking for some qualitative reviews and it's been hit or miss. A friend tossed me Caleb's early review and it seemed amateurish at best (
). Is there anyone more industry that has the ins/outs you'd recommend?

With so many reviews complaining about the "cheap plastic" body, I doubt BM's next few cameras will be a carbon fiber composite. If BM had mounted a useless heavy ballast inside it, then these reviewers would be describing it as a heavy, durable plastic.

It's not the most rugged camera I've used but it feels great in the hand.

The 8Sinn cage negates that issue from a practical standpoint and the 1/2 cage keeps the very responsive design in tact.

With the really great 5" touchscreen and a small (3.5) EV on it, it's pretty complete.
Really loving it.

Robert’s list is a great start. But don’t overlook letting the works of talented cinematographers speak for themselves. Having access to “breaking news" reviews are occasionally very helpful, but not always. Now the camera is in more hands and BMD is including examples of serenely artistic creative work in the official Pocket 4K Gallery, I think those works are equally convincing that the camera as a tool passes the grade.

IMO the "breaking" reviews are less useful now... I generally just wait until the cameras are in the hands of actual pros.

One of the things that I to do vet reviews though is to read reviews of products that I also have personal experience with. Opinions aside, if their facts don't jive with reality, I know they're not legit and I don't follow them or pay attention to what they have to say.

Thanks for some broadened material for my readers/subs. Like others have mentioned, I like following people within the industry shooting to get a real vibe for it but it's going to be a while before those make their appearances. Here though I've added some material that wasn't in my collections before, so more fun reading/watching ahead.

Footage. That's what counts. I look at the footage and read here and there about what people say about grading the footage.

I don't think it looks or feels cheap at all. Even so, if people 'think' that then I'm afraid feelings and thoughts don't mean reality. This new construction makes it very light, which is just what we need for this type of camera. On top of this, there's the picture and the excellent way that the controls are designed. It's a huge improvement over the original camera, and I'm going to be making some nice stuff with it! :-)

I've not heard any of the trustworthy reviews complaining about a "cheap plastic" body.
And I can confirm first hand it does neither feel nor look cheap at all.

Light was whole point in replacing the all-metal chassis with a carbon fiber composite.

Apparently though, these comments are based on "heavy" = "robust" rather than on reality.

Sigh...

Who are your trusted reviewers?

Oyvind, once again the community here is indebted to your insatiable pursuit of The Truth. Are you sure you’re not from The Valley?

The Truth about The Truth:
By the way, speaking of The Truth, I have it from my usually unreliable sources that Curls is actually the daughter of Grunt Petty and this video was her answer to her father’s refusal to let her wear that wig to her high school graduation. It was a family vote to approve the wig, but a result of 1 yea and 1 nay meant a defeat for the motion. Obviously Grunt voted against and Grunt’s wife voted in favour. Curls was not allowed to vote because she has not passed the age of immaturity. Grunt’s wife makes the best pizza in The Valley! If you’re wondering about my source because you find everything I’ve said hard to believe, you understand I can’t name names, but my furry friend did make a cameo appearance in the video.
