What daylight 7" monitors are best for BMPCC4K

PostSat Oct 13, 2018 2:14 am

Like many others, I too, await my BMPCC4k but need to know, what is the best (or suitable) daylight (high NITS) 7" monitor to use with this camera? This is for viewing, composing, focusing etc, not recording. 98% of my work will be outdoors and at night.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim, not positive how this SmallHD 702Bright monitor handles the DCI 4K, but it should accept the HDMI HD output from the BMPCC4K.

I own that monitor and have had to send it back twice to SmallHD to repair the SDI input despite using it very gently only 3 times. Might want to look into other more reliable options.

If I was buying today, I'd be looking at this one:

I agree Jamie; i had not seen that monitor that will definitely outshine the sun. Some of the terminology they use is strange to me, but the functionality is there. Not inexpensive but finally a monitor that should be visible in any situation.

Thanks guys for the info re above.

That monitor from TV Logic is unbelievable but... here in Australia, it's double the cost of an Atamos Shogun Inferno 7" which has a 1500nits screen. I've seen the fleetworld FW703 series and would work the BMPCC and the cost is around $400 USD, I know, you get what you pay for, but affordable. The SmallHD is a wow too! but again very costly, here in Oz.

So my new question is: Would the Shogun Inferno 7" monitor be OK for this small camera? I know the camera will only output in 1080 @60P frame rate, but its the daylight nits, that I need. The cam will do the recording. I just need a bright daylight monitor to focus, compose and shoot the scene. By getting the Inferno, I'd have it now so when I do upgrade to a larger 4K cine camera, I'll have a recording monitor. Am I making sense here?

Thanks,

Jim

I don't have the shogun, but was told by someone who does that it was not quite bright enough for clear viewing in full daylight. It's 1500 nits which is the bare minimum for daylight viewing, so if that's the one feature you're buying the monitor to get, you may want to choose a monitor with higher nits

Atomos Shogun Inferno
1500 nits
HDMI & SDI
$1,295

Portkeys BM7
2000 nits
HDMI & SDI
$999 USD

SmallHD 703 Bright
2200 nits
HDMI & SDI
$2,999 USD

Cinemartin Katherin
2500 nits
HDMI & SDI
$1250 USD

TV Logic F-7H
3600 nits
HDMI & SDI
€1,800

The OSEE HCM700 is a good and affordable option. I love mine.

OSEE HCM700 is 1100 nits. Can you see the screen in full daylight?

I have the Shogun Inferno. It can can be seen quite well at full brightness, as long as the sun does not directly shine onto the screen. Then it will be on the edge but you can work with it.
But the Shogun Inferno is a heavy thing, especially when setup with two big batteries.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

looks tough as nails
only $999
has all the bells and whistles

Way back I purchased the Ikan D7W to pair with my BMCC, only for it's built-in exposure tools. It did quite create a hole in my wallet, literally. And as far as it's viewing performance in broad daylight, I'd had to reach for the black cloth. Imho, OLED's are the way to go if shooting in the sun. Anything else is a waste of money.

The sun finally came back to Nashville yesterday and I got the chance to try to shoot in broad daylight. I found that at 100% brightness it was almost usable. If I ducked into shade I could see it fine. This makes me think that a simple hood would do the trick. If no one else makes a 3D object for printing in the near future, i'll probably put one together. The bezel around the screen seems like it provides a decent starting point for mounting.

I’ve used my jacket over my camera monitor when the angle of the sun is causing problems. But that gets old pretty fast. Would be a pleasure to have a monitor that is bright enough, but so far there’s always something else with a higher priority. I’ll continue with my jacket.

Hi, what about the small hd focus?
The resolution is lower (1280x720), but would be enough? And will it be SAFE to feed the bmpcc4K with the dummy canon battery?
It is very light and 800 nits, I like it (I am between this or the smallhd 501 )

Edit: my fault, the thread was about 7" monitors...

I don't think the Focus offers much benefit over the screen already on the 4K Pocket.

No, but the new OLED version does, better display in sunlight.

That’s surprising. While OLED has good black levels, it doesn’t get very bright, so OLED screens aren’t usually a good choice for full sun. Did SmallHD find some way around that?

For shoulder rig use, I like that it is light so it doesn't descompensate the weight. And it is 800 nits for exteriors. AND (this is very important for me and the BMPCC4K doesn't got it yet) it has anamorphic desqueeze.
Finally though I've choosen the 501small hd
